The highlight of Weston’s Blue Square South season so far was the first-ever win at Twerton Park over Bath City in over 25 visits.

UNDOUBTEDLY the highlight of Weston’s Blue Square South season so far was the first-ever win at Twerton Park over Bath City in over 25 visits over the years in all competitions.

In the 1950s and 1960s, playing against City Reserves in the Western League, Weston rarely, if ever managed a goal and they also lost in the Somerset Premier Cup, the FA Cup, FA Trophy and League Cups.

Fortunately, all this was put right on Boxing Day when two goals by Kane Ingram were enough for victory, in a game played in monsoon conditions and the standard of football was a credit to both teams.

Weston started their campaign back in August with Hayes and Yeading visitors to the Woodspring Stadium and the result was a 1-1 draw. Three days later, Weston were at Farnborough and lost 2-1, Ross Stearn the scorer.

Another loss was suffered the following Saturday with the side failing 3-0 at high-spenders Eastleigh. On the Bank Holiday Monday, Truro City were visitors and went victorious 2-0 to end the month with only one point to show.

September 1 saw Weston pick up their second point with a scoreless draw at Hornchurch, but three days later they enjoyed their first win, beating Staines Town 1-0, Matt Villis the scorer. This was followed by a home 1-1 draw with Sutton United, new signing Ross Stearn hitting the target from the penalty spot.

Away at Chelmsford City, Stearn was again on target in a 2-1 defeat. Weston’s next game was in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup when they won 2-0 at Frome Town, Ingram and Stearn the scorers.

The squad ended September with two good league victories, 3-0 away to Havant and Waterlooville with Martin Slocombe, Dayle Grubb and Nat Pepperell on target. Four days later, they beat Eastbourne Borough 3-2, Nabby Diallo, Stearn and another new signing, Ashley Kington the scorers.

October started with an easy 6-1 win over Street in the Somerset Premier Cup, Chris Young weighing in with four goals and two others from Jamie Price and a penalty by yet another new signing Chris Hemmings.

Against Worcester City in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup, Weston drew 1-1 at home, Ingram the scorer, but lost the replay at St Georges Lane 1-0. Back in league action the following Saturday, Weston had a 1-0 win at Maidenhead United, with Ingram on target.

Basingstoke were next up and Weston enjoyed their biggest win so far, 5-2, with goals coming from Diallo, Hemmings, Ingram, Kington and Stearn from the penalty spot. But in their next game at home to Boreham Wood, Weston lost 4-2, Hemmings and Stearn again from the penalty spot.

November started with a scoreless draw against Billericay Town away, but then against Frome Town in the Somerset Premier Cup, they lost at home 4-2, another new signing Kayne McClaggon the scorer, and an own goal.

Away to Salisbury City in the FA Trophy, Weston lost 3-0, and they followed this by picking up a point in a home draw against Havant and Waterlooville, Kington and Hemmings on target. The Seagulls ended the month with a 3-1 defeat at Dover Athletic, Diallo the marksman.

December 1 saw Weston get revenge by recording a first win in four visits to Boreham Wood, another new name, Pete Monks the scorer. Brett Trowbridge was on target as Weston beat Hornchurch 1-0 and Trowbridge was again the scorer in a 1-1 draw at Staines Town.

The next game was the historic win at Bath City, but in the return game on New Year’s Day they crashed 4-1 to the Romans, Stearn the scorer from the penalty spot.

However, the Seagulls are handily placed in seventh spot in the table, with nine wins, six draws and seven losses, scoring 30 and conceding 30 and having 33 points.
