Hornettes started the new season with victory over St Mary's.

HORNETTES defeated St Mary’s Old Boys ladies 33-10 in the first league match of the season.

Hornettes scored in the first two minutes from a penalty taken 40 metres out. Prop Abbey Constable broke the defensive line and scored under the posts. St Mary’s struck back quickly and exploited a missed tackle in the back line to score in the corner.

Hornettes scored next with a dazzling run from debutant full-back Paula Wognarowsky, who ran 50 metres with some brilliant sidestepping moves. Tanya Carver-Cox made a good solo run, but was tackled just short of the line.

Abbey Constable scored her second, receiving the ball from the back of a ruck 40 metres out. Wognarowsky scored her second try to make it 28-5 at half time. All four tries were converted by Laura Clarke.

The econd half was a much closer, St Mary’s changed their tactics and played a tighter forward game, scoring their second try following a number of forward moves.

Hornets finished the game by scoring the last try of the game in the corner following some good interplay and support between the backs. The final pass was taken by Kate Robinson, also playing her first game for the club.
