SPECIAL stage rallying is set to return to Brean Leisure Park over the weekend with the running of the South West’s annual premier rally, the K&R Mitsubishi Stages, promoted by locally based Club Rallysport West.

An impressive 80-plus entries line up for the Saturday start, with no less than five world rally cars among the top seeds.

Six stages will be completed throughout Saturday with a further six stages on Sunday and an added Trophy Rally incorporating those competitors who were unfortunate to retire from the rally on the Saturday stages and who manage to put things back together for the Sunday morning re-start.

The rally, which was awarded the coveted South West Rally of the Year in 2011, has grown in stature and popularity since its inception in 1997 and now attracts some of the sports leading clubmen from around the UK competing in a wide range of cars.

The rally will again be the opening round of two major regional championship series, the Association of South Western Motor Clubs and the Cotswold Motor Sport Group.

Top seeds for this years event are, Peter Lloyd from South Wales driving a Subaru Impreza S14 WRC. Peter has won this event over the last four consecutive years and will be out to make it a fifth.

Trying hard to stop him will be Martyn England from Ilminster, in a Mitsubishi EVO, Steve Furzeland from Plymouth (Subaru Impreza S12 WRC), Karl Broad from Taunton (Subaru Impreza WRC), Mike Threlfall, also from Taunton (Mitsubishi EVO) and newcomer to Brean, Peter Elkins, from Westbury, Wiltshire (Ford Focus WRC).

Terchnical scrutineering of the cars takes place within the park on Friday afternoon, with the rally getting under way at 10am on Saturday morning. Spectators are welcome into the park and both indoor and outdoor catering facilities will be available on Saturday and Sunday.

The organisers have ensured that spectators are well looked after with three viewing area, one of which has a covered grandstand, giving excellent viewing across the inner field stages.

Brean is one of the very few venues where spectators can watch this exciting sport at close quarters. Spectators will be admitted to the park over both days of the rally with an admission charge of £5 (accompanied children under-12 will be admitted free) and car parking will be £5. Gates open on both days from 8.30am.
