Junior Jack Butterfield posted the best score of the day at Worlebury Golf Club’s April medal.

THE April medal at Worlebury produced a good turnout in each of the divisions, with the score of the day being a nett 62 by junior Jack Butterfield to win Division 2 at a canter.

Jack, grandson of long-standing member Brian Butterfield, had a good season last year, but a serious footballing injury sidelined him for a number of months. Now back to full fitness, he will be looking to build on this win in the coming months.

John Jones took second place in this division with a fine 65 and Alan Port came third with a 68.

Former junior Billy Coles turned back the years to win Division 1, his excellent nett 67 pipped yet another former junior James Marshall, on countback. Head greenkeeper Tim Needham, followed closely behind with a 68 and had the consolation of recording the lowest gross score of the day.

Richard Exon played well to win Division 3 with a nett 67. Adrian Axelson came second with a 68 and Paul Coumis, third, a further shot adrift.

Worlebury Royals made their debut in the Avalon League and under the captaincy of Nathan Talbot and recorded a fine 3.5 to 1.5 win at Cricket St Thomas Golf Club (formerly Windwhistle).

This away win gave the team 12.5 points. It was a solid all-round performance from the team, who were representing the club for the first time and augurs well for the forthcoming campaign.

The seniors have made a good start to their social matches recording wins against Enmore and Weston.

Gary Marks and Peter Phillips’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end in the captain/pro challenge when they lost 2&1 to the established pairing of Chris Mannings-Hill and Andy Nicholls.

It was a high quality match with birdies galore. Chris and Andy had a run of four from the sixth with Gary stemming the tide with one of his own on the 10th. Three of the players birdied the 13th as the birdie fest continued.

The challengers clinched their win on the 17th and are the first to qualify for the end of season Roy Connett Salver.

One hundred and twenty members and guests crowded into the clubhouse for a 60s evening which was organised by the Ssocial committee. Entertainment was provided by the Bristol-based band, the Mystics, who played an excellent set.

Fancy dress was encouraged and our picture shows a number of partygoers who took the trip down memory lane.

SEVENTY two Weston players took part in the annual match against the British Seniors Golf Society.

The event was played in fantastic weather and the club received favourable comments about the course and hospitality. The result was a 20-14 match win for Weston.

Weston B team recorded their first win of the season after last week’s draw. Led off by Darren Henderson and Chris Homer they had a 2&1 win. Steve Petrie and Alan Harris were unable to follow up their win from the previous week against Long Sutton and lost 2&1.

The reliable pairing of Gary Homer and Steve Corrick had a comfortable 4&3 win and with Paul O’Hara and John Stokes winning 4&2 things looked good for Weston.

Jack Radcliffe and Mark Fozzard, despite being two up and four to play, succumbed on the last to give Weston a final score of 3-2.

Eighteen members travelled to Minehead to play a club mixed friendly match. Receiving a warm welcome and playing in near perfect conditions the match was halved 4.5-4.5.

Despite a cool easterly breeze, the day dawned fine for the Weston seniors’ Derrick Wood Trophy. With the greens hard and fast through lack of April rain, scoring proved difficult for many of the 57 competitors.

A few found the conditions to their liking and Gerald Taylor revelled in the spring sunshine shooting a fine nett 66 to win the trophy by three shots. Marshall McKee on 69 was runner-up, followed by Rod Thomas in third, whose 70 beat Mark Frisby on countback.

The ladies played their second millennium qualifier Stableford competition, combining the Saturday and Tuesday results. The fairways were running well due to lack of rainfall so high scores were inevitable.

Vicki Brewin came in first place with 40 points, two shots clear of Jade Cope in second place with 38. Sally Brosnan was third with 37 on countback to Lynn Perry in fourth.

NEARLY 60 golfers from Wedmore travelled to the Wiltshire Golf Club for the annual captains’ away weekend.

There was none of the drama of the previous year when the captain’s wife gave birth, but there was excellent golf over the three days.

First was a Stableford with trophies donated by the Paul Plume, who had contributed so much to these events even during his struggle with cancer. Inaugural winners were Paul Dickie with 40 points, and the indomitable Liz Sims, who scored 34, despite being ill earlier in the week.

Day two had two betterball competitions for mixed and all-male pairs. Vera Ireland and Bobby Jones took first place in the mixed with Tony Ribi and Steve Smith winning the men’s event.

The weekend ended with a bowmaker in a biting cold wind which did not deter the winning team of Jane Hewitt, Jim Dobbs, Jim Baker and Tony Hoskings.

Meanwhile, at Wedmore, the monthly medal was taking place. Division 1 went to Dominic Smith who beat John Russell on countback after both scored 68. Richard Weight was third on 71.

Simon Moore scored 69 to win Division 2 by a shot from John Vowles with David Myers third. Brian Fry had the best score of the day, 67, to win Division 3 by one shot from David Bates, with Bill Wallace in third.

Desiree McGowan won the ladies’ competition by one shot from Louise Allen.

Earlier in the week, seniors’ captain Jim Crick took on allcomers with professional Nick Pope and despite not winning, did raise £112 for the captains’ charity.

Alasdair McDonald and Martin Peakman won the golf with 42 points, ahead of Barry Lucas and Geoff Brooks and Mike Peacock and Gordon Newbery, both pairs scoring 41.

The ladies were in action playing a Stableford. Jenny Thomas saw her handicap tumble after scoring 41 points, Ruth Pearson was two points back in second place.

Sue Spink beat Rachel Lockley for third place after both scored 38 and Aileen Robertson claimed fifth place, again on countback, ahead of Carol Pinks.

TWO more Jones’s will have their names engraved onto the impressive Presidents Day Trophy this year as the names of Paul and Eric Jones join that of 2014 winner Steve.

Last year’s club captain Paul and his uncle Eric dovetailed perfectly as they blitzed their way round the course accumulating 47 points on the way.

This score gave them a 2 point winning margin over their playing partners for the day Richard Triscott and Les Clutterbuck. That fourball group amassed an amazing 92 points between them as the nett birdies and eagles flowed regularly.

Third place went to Graham Foy and Dave Morgan another two points back on 43, which was one ahead of Steve Bateman and Paul McLanaghan who claimed fourth.

More success for the Jones’s came as Steve Jones won the April Stableford with an impressive 39-point score. He topped Division 1 four points ahead of Roger Vaughan. Dave Bradley was the only other player to beat his handicap as he won Division 2 with 37 points, three clear of Tony Richards.

Four players posted 32 points in Division 3 with Roger Phillips winning a countback to take the award from Les Byrne, Trevor Searle and Dai Wood. Annie Williams won the ladies’ Stableford with 33 points.

Tony Bissett scored 42 points to take the top spot in the penultimate Super Series qualifying round of the campaign. He won by one from Tony Higgins and Ian Adams was third on 40 in a day of good scoring.

The seniors team travelled away to Woodspring, but returned on the wrong end of a heavy defeat. They will look to avenge their 5.5-0.5 drubbing in the return fixture later in the year.
