WESTON Amateur Boxing Club contested three bouts at the recent Grand Pier show.

First to don the club’s black and gold attire was 13-year-old Wyvern schoolboy Bradley Warwick.

Bradley faced 14-year-old Harry Webb from Lympstone, Devon. From the opening bell, Webb attacked with a flurry of punches forcing Warwick onto the back foot. He received a standing eight count and soon after took a standing count before the referee called a halt to the proceedings.

Next up for Weston, was 14-year-old Churchill schoolboy Conor Littlewood, who faced Dan Shackell, of National Smelting, Bristol.

A cagey opening round saw both boxers measuring each other up before Conor stepped up his game in the second. One left uppercut wobbled the knees of his opponent, who managed to hang on without a count.

Having got his breath back for the start of the third round, Conor attacked from the bell, but started to slow as both boxers flagged, and went through the motions till the final bell.

Conor’s workrate and comfortable second round was enough for him to be announced the winner, with rapturous applause from his strong following.

Two more contests took place before the interval, Tom Stone of Sweatbox, Bristol, won on points against Bridgwater’s Magic Hicki and the first female contest to take place in Weston saw Irish representative box English representative Lucia Geatani, the Irish girl taking the decision on points.

First on after the interval was 13-year-old Marcus Preddy, of Wyvern School, who was making his debut for Weston Warriors.

Marcus’ opponent was Jon Conway of Spanny Ammys, Bristol. Marcus boxed well under the guidance of coach dad Rob and was constantly on the attack and he won all three rounds comfortably.

Jake Giddings of Weston, was next in, facing Jared Jones of Lympstone, Devon. Jake was hoping to continue his unbeaten senior record over the last 20 months, and did not want to let down his local support.

Jones tried to stamp his authority, but Jake remained behind a tight guard soaking up all Jones had to offer, before replying with several combinations of his own. Jones was continually warned for his holding and eventually the referee had seen enough in the middle of the third disqualifying Jones.

The final bout of the evening saw Weston’s popular 30-year-old bar owner Gary Bettle make his debut against the huge muscle bound John Pomeyie of Empire, Bristol.

Gary found it tough in the first round, but got it together in the second to pull it back, and fought a tough battle for both boxers in the third to do enough to win.

A good night for both Weston club put them firmly on the boxing map, and it was also great to have former world champions Jane Couch, Glen Catley and Tim Witherspoon as guests.
