Jubilee Shield victory for Rob at Worlebury

ONE of the premier board competitions of the season at Worlebury Golf Club, the Jubilee Cup and Shield was held last Saturday.

This 36-hole Stableford event played over the one day, was played with a fierce south westerly wind blowing across the course making the going very tough.

The pace was set in the morning by Rob Berry winning the gross on 33 points, playing off a five handicap, whilst Clive Wilson came in with the best net score of 39 points playing off 18.

The afternoon round saw Harry Rowlands posting 34 points to win the gross score and John Wright the best net score with 40 points after countback.

The overall winner of the Jubilee Shield for the gross score was the early leader Berry, after a four-hole play-off against Simon Dempsey. The net competition will require an 18-hole play off between gross winner Berry and the first round net leader Wilson to decide the cup winner after a tie.

The seniors’ also recorded their first team win of the season with a good 4-2 win over Burnham & Berrow, but went down to Mendip 5-2 in the week’s second fixture.

? WESTON Golf Club captain Pete Allen held a fund-raising day in aid of the Junior Golf Foundation with a Texas Scramble in teams of four.

It was won by the team of Pete Fryer, Rich Carter, Andy Northern and Lee Walsh with a score of nett 54, from Steve Edwards, John Searle, Mike McKee and Paul McKechan (55.8).

The Richardson Trophy was won by Terry Rice with a nett 64 (9), followed by Paul Turner 66 (10) and Matt Brosnan 67 (8). This was followed by the Pentagon Trophy played in blustery conditions, which was won by John Lancaster with a nett 67 (15) from Aarron Northern 67 (11) and Jim Ness 67 (16).

Jake Colman carded a commendable nett 62 (24), but the qualifying limit for the competition was 18 handicap giving him a nett 68

From the ladies’ section, the Teachers Trophy was won by Pat Rowland with a nett 68, from Zena Balcombe (69) and Diney (71).

This was followed by the EWGA Medal which was won by Jade Cope with a nett 69, followed again by Zena Balcombe (72) and Alysia Rees (75).

Weston A hosted Long Sutton C in an Avalon League Division 5 match and faced the windiest conditions of the year so far.

After back-to-back defeats, Weston managed to remain unbeaten. The big hitting partnership of Pete Blunden and Roger Thompson ran out comfortable 5&3 winners. Simon Collier and Ronald Mabasa were two holes down early in their match, but managed to halve their game.

Iain Hall-Scott and debutant Andy Oldershaw recorded a 2&1 victory. Graham Osman partnering Nigel Browne were one down with two to play, but a par from Nigel to win the 18th halved the match.

Last out were Rob Tate and another debutant Mikey Brueford. In a competitive match, the Weston pair won 3&2. The result was a 4-1 win for Weston and 10 valuable points.

Also playing in the blustery conditions on Sunday were Weston’s mixed team when they visited the Isle of Wedmore. Weston won 6.5-5 .5 with the tail ‘wagging’ rather effectively, winning five and halving one of the last six matches to snatch victory.

? SENIORS’ day moved to Tuesday at Wedmore with 150 golfers taking part in the annual open day.

Thirty one clubs were represented at the event sponsored once again this year by Butcombe Brewery.

Despite the presence of so many visitors, it was home players who dominated the prizes. John Russell won Division 1 with 37 points ahead of A Smyth (37) from Filton and G Hill (36) from Taunton Vale.

In Division 2, all the places went to Wedmore players with the final places decided on countback. Frank Denniston (38) took first place from David Coggan and Brian Kidd. Division 3 also went to a Wedmore player with George Smith on 40 points, finishing ahead of Barry Stone (36) and P Rushworth from Sherborne.

With Peter Bendell (37) from Wedmore taking the Over-70s prize, it seemed as if home players were being unfair on their guests. Appropriately though, the best score of the day and with it the Butcombe Trophy did go to one of the visitors.

This was Phil Moody from the Mendip who recorded the best score of the day with an impressive 41 points made in the windy conditions.

Wind was still a factor on Thursday when the ladies invited their own guests to the club for their invitation day. Annie Fry playing with guest Dot Alwood from Tall Pines took first place with 43 points.

The other places were fiercely contested with Maggie Morris and guest Sheila Ayliffe securing second place on countback from Jan Jenkins and Dawn Russell from Orchardleigh, both pairs scoring 41 points.

There was also a tie for fourth and fifth places with Maggs Willetts and Mary Dolman from Saltford, edging out Cathy Olive and Jenny Merrett on countback after both had scored 40 points.

? WAYNE Barrett led the way in Brean Golf Club’s May Monthly Medal, which was played in high winds.

The breeze affected many cards, but Barrett returned a steady nett 69. Only one other player broke par and he was unlucky that he was in the same division as Barrett. Mike Parfitt compiled a nett 70 only to find he was pipped by one.

Tony Richards was victorious in a small entry in Division 1, whilst Nigel Hodges’ 75 was good enough to take the Division 3 award ahead of Kevin Phelan. Shelia Rouse won another Medal in the ladies’ section, with Debbie Windmill as runner-up.

Jim McLauchlan led the way in the Super Series Stableford. He carded 38 points as he won by one from Mike Porter. Third place went to Mike Chaloner on 35.

It was a busy weekend for the two Avalon League teams with the A team having a double header of fixtures. Both games were away from home and on Saturday they travelled to Stockwood Vale and lost a close game by 3-2. The following day in strong winds at Burnham and Berrow, they ended up on the wrong end of the same scoreline.

The B team continued their impressive start to the season with a home success over a strong Minehead team by the popular 3-2 margin.

The annual friendly fixture with Caerleon took place at Brean with the home side defeating their Welsh counterparts, by four matches to three.

The seniors’ are getting the hang of winning matches now as they recorded their biggest home win of the year against Cannington. None of the home pairs were defeated with four wins and two halved matches making up the 5-1 scoreline.

John Sherwood took the honours in the May seniors’ Stableford as he totalled 36 points. Second place was decided on countback after both Roger Phillips and Mike Allen had 34 points with Phillips edging it on the back nine.

? WORLEBURY Golf Club held their Open Mixed Greensomes Stableford on a blustery day.

The greens were in pristine condition and the course played exceptionally well and promises great results for the future.

? THE Dickinson Cup qualifying round at Worlebury Ladies Golf Club was won by Janice Hartree in the Silver Division with a net 71.

The Barlow Cup qualifying round was won by Michelle James scoring a net 69, who also won the EWGA May Medal with another 69.
