Woodland Tennis Club’s juniors joined in the celebrations for the Queen’s 90th birthday with a fund raising event at the club.

Woodland Tennis Club’s juniors joined in the celebrations for the Queen’s 90th birthday by holding a fund raiser.

Union flag bunting adorned the club and everyone dressed up in red, white and blue. The usual coaching sessions were set aside in favour of games such as King, in which the winner of the rally got to wear the crown, and Tower of London where failure to make a set number of shots with coach Steve Pantling landed you in the tower until you were rescued by a fellow team member.

Cakes and hot dogs were on sale and an amazing £255 was raised to buy coaching equipment. The event finished on a high note with some presentations being made by Weston MP, John Penrose to the junior doubles winners, Tom Deverson and Jenson Gifford and to Alex Price and Jonathan Evans, who had just completed their LTA Tennis Leaders qualification.

Mr Penrose was impressed to see so many juniors actively participating in the sport and being so enthusiastic about tennis.

He said: “I was delighted to celebrate Woodland Lawn Tennis Club’s success. They’ve helped top-quality players develop their skills in the past and, equally importantly, they offer great facilities for fun tennis right in the middle of Weston, with plenty of club team spirit as well.”
