WOODLAND Tennis Club’s juniors started their centenary celebrations by holding a junior and adult tournament.
In near perfect conditions, the juniors, most of them partnered by their parents, competed in a round robin event split into two groups dependent on the age of the junior.
Both groups had close matches. Lydia Buckingham and Archit Singhal, partnered by dads Peter and Parag, were neck and neck throughout the day and a singles tiebreak had to be played between the two to decide upon a winner.
In a close contest, Lydia just managed to win 7-5 to take the trophy. In the younger group, things were just as tense.

The opening match between Alex and Steve Price and Stephie and Annie Buckingham was characterised by the number of deuces and the length of the contest. In the end, Alex and Steve managed to win 7-5, which was to prove decisive and they won their group.
Organiser and club secretary, Annie Buckingham, was delighted by the day and said: “We’ve all had a brilliant time. It’s great for the parents to get to play tennis with their children and see at close hand how they are getting on.

Woodland’s centenary event next month is open to the public. It is a drop-in session on June 24 between 2- 5pm and includes a speed gun challenge, tennis skittles and racket testing courtesy of the Tony Pryce Sports.
