Kings of Wessex Academy Year 10 girls have been crowned Somerset County handball champions.

Friday 13th proved to be auspicious and lucky for The Kings of Wessex Academy Year 10 girls who were crowned the Somerset County handball champions.

But the girls’ triumph was due to more than luck when the PE department escorted 20 Year 10 students to compete in the Somerset Under-15 Handball competition for boys and girls.

Each team played five games against Heathfield, Holyrood, St Dunstan’s, Kingsmead and Crispin Schools and after some tough matches, the girls ended the day undefeated, winning the deciding match 3-0 against Bishop Fox’s School.

Indeed, they only drew one game making them the champions at their first-ever tournament. Next for the girls is to represent Somerset in the regional competition on May 2 in Paignton.

Congratulations to the team: Zoe Collyer, Ruth Day, Liv Dilly, Izzi Morgan, Ellen Scantlebury (captain), Ruby Stickley, Millie Stoyles, Izzy Taylor, Kylie Turner and Scarlett West for their outstanding performance.

Executive headteacher Gavin Ball said: “Congratulations to the girls on their wonderful achievement as the county handball champions. I am very proud of them for working brilliantly together as a team and showing themselves to be so skilled and determined.”
