WESTON entertained top of the table Clevedon at Priory and the scoreline did not reflect the quick moving end-to-end game.

Clevedon started strongly and moved the ball at pace, the Weston defence of Vanessa Mawford, Amy Taylor and Charlotte Gordon worked hard to contain the lively Clevedon forwards and Weston keeper Sarah Langley-Wheeler was called upon to make several fine saves.

Clevedon broke the deadlock on 12 minutes when Sandra Sianey was on hand to scramble the ball over the line. They extended their lead through Lucy Gray with a well-struck short corner.

Weston worked hard with the midfield of Nikki Baker, Michelle Tuxford, Rosie Bellinger and the outstanding Charli Crandon moving the ball well and at pace, but could not get the breakthrough their hard work deserved. Hollie Yacle got Clevedon’s third just before half-time.

In the second half, Weston created a hatful of chances including Mich Aldridge hitting the post, but they just couldn’t find their finishing touch. The half was evenly played out with both sides playing some excellent hockey.

Elaine Basterfield scored Clevedon’s fourth when her determined run beat the keeper and she nipped the ball into the net. Some interesting umpiring decisions gifted Clevedon their fifth when they were awarded a penalty corner, which was well finished by Lucy Gray.

Weston shouldn’t be disheartened by this result, they just met a team who on the day were on top form, it may well be a different result on the return fixture if Weston can finish their chances.

Weston’s player of the match was Charli Crandon. Weston are away to Somerset Gryphons at Clevedon School on Saturday (12noon). Supporters welcome.

Burnham Ladies 1

Weston Ladies II 0

Weston had an early start on Saturday as they travelled to Burnham for a 10am push back and unfortunately this was reflected on the pitch.

A quiet and pedestrian first half saw Weston being dictated to by the home side, which led to interrupted play and a severe lack of chances.

Player of the match Lynne Fryer battled relentlessly in midfield and outstanding goalkeeping from Stacey Caple kept Burnham at bay for the interim, but Weston couldn’t withstand the pressure and conceded making the score 1-0 at half-time.

A few changes in the interval and a more alert start to the second half saw Weston playing their own game again with good possession and a string of firm passes out of defence giving Jade Brown something to build on with a few attempts on goal, but to no avail.

Weston were evidently missing several of their core players and despite four new team members holding their own, the game lacked fluidity and understanding and Weston came away with a disappointing defeat.
