Weston ladies were held to a scoreless draw against close neighbours Cheddar.

FOLLOWING several weeks of cancelled games due to recent sub-zero temperatures, Weston Ladies 1st XI were keen to travel to Wells to take on rivals Cheddar.

This week saw the return of several players and Weston’s hopes were high as the team was almost returned to full strength.

Strong midfield play between captain Charlie Crandon and Taylor Kingscott began to tear holes in the Cheddar defence. However, superb play from the Cheddar goalkeeper kept the Weston forwards at bay.

Weston pushed to penetrate the well-drilled Cheddar side and an excellent run from Mercedes of Weston man of the match Laura Draycott which she followed with a well-struck shot from the top of the D, finished just short as forward Nikki Baker closed in.

In the second half, Weston again dominated the play and the ‘fantastic four’ defensive quartet of Draycott, Ness Mawford, Charlotte Gordon and Claire Westgate kept the quick and skilful Cheddar forwards from posing any real threat.

Great play between midfielder Michelle Tuxford and forward Rosie Bellinger saw more chances created, but the Cheddar keeper continued to make fantastic saves to deny Weston the winning goal.

It was a somewhat disappointing result for Weston ladies who travel again on Saturday to take on Taunton Vale 3rd XI. A midweek re-arranged match sees Weston face local rivals Winscombe at Hans Price Academy on Wednesday at 8.30pm, all supporters welcome.
