The semi-final places for the Weston Ladies’ Open Bowls Tournament Stoneleigh Pairs has been finalised.

WESSEX duo Pam Turner and Barbara Jones qualified for the semi-finals of the Stoneleigh Ladies’ Pairs during another wet stint at the Weston Ladies’ Open Bowls Tournament, sponsored by Optika.

In Saturday morning’s semis, they will play West Backwell duo Cynthia Burgess and Val Peckham. The other semi-final also features a local, St Andrews’s Judy Forse, who partners Pat Bax (Rugby), last year’s mixed pairs champion. Their opponents will be Debbie Bloxham and Sharon Keal from the Snitterfield club in Warwickshire.

Of the 23 teams who actually competed – one withdrew beforehand – only the West Backwell pair Cynthia Burgess and Val Peckham collected full points and some fancied teams failed to make the semi-finals.

They included: Clevedon’s Lynn Palmer/Teri Cuff; singles champion Maureen Edwards and her partner Barbara Mumford; and the 2012 winners Margaret Dyer/Sarah Lowman.

The semi-final places were decided in favour of the four teams with the best records across the two round-robin groups, firstly on points won then on shot-difference. As it worked out, two teams qualified from each group.

A disappointment was that Bath’s Somerset Johns Trophy duo Joan Walmsley and Judith Staunton, who won both the games they played and had a walkover in the other, withdrew after the group stage because they were not available for Saturday’s semis.
