Winscombe 10 pts

THE lack of rugby over the holiday period due to poor weather proved a bonus to the Winscombe team who were all itching to get out on to the pitch.

Both teams were evenly matched up front and in the backs. Ten minutes into the match, Owen Howell collected a high kick and he broke away after a clever change of direction. He chipped the ball over the defence and the subsequent kick by the S&P full-back was charged down for George House to score under the posts, which Howell converted.

S&P were finding it hard to penetrate the Winscombe defence, but their persistence paid off and towards the end of the first half, they were rewarded with two unconverted pushover tries.

Undeterred, Winscombe drove back and started to dominate the set scrums with man of the match Will Foster showing some neat breaks from the back row. Just before the break, Winscombe were awarded a penalty which Howell converted to make to score 10-10 at the break.

Playing up the slope in the second half, a break by Foster on the blind side of a set scrum some 20 metres from the line was dashed just short and a second attack by the backs saw Howell break free with support from James Flower.

The S&P defence however remained sound and another chance was thwarted. With both teams maintaining a 10-10 score and defending well, a S&P flanker broke away from a loose maul and ran in under the posts for a converted try to finish the game.

This Saturday, Winscombe are at home to Chard, kick-off 2.30pm. There is a vice-presidents' lunch at the Woodborough Inn prior to the match. Call 01934 844167 to make a reservation.

Winscombe 3rds 20 pts

Wyvern 9 pts

WINSCOMBE Mighty Third XV consolidated their position at the foot of Somerset 3 South with a sparkling display against third-placed Wyvern.

Winscombe dominated in the scrum and loose play, but Wyvern were tackling well and no score would come. Eventually the prodigals kicked a penalty to take the lead.

Winscombe then scored a try when the ball was spun out along the line, eventually reaching Phil Bracewell. Yards from the line, he was brought down by a Wyvern tackle. Fortunately, Sam was on hand to pick up and dive over the line.

In the second half, Winscombe two more tries, both finished well by Tony Young to record a rare victory for the Thirds.
