Brean Golf Club member records his first-ever hole-in-one.

BREAN Golf Club senior Jim McLauchlan bounced back to top form by winning the Bogey Trophy at Brean.

He finished at +3 alongside two others players, but after a countback he was declared the winner. Alan Marshall had to settle for second and Kevin Davies took third.

Marshall also suffered in the twos competition as well. He posted the only two, but news filtered through that Lee Trumper had had a hole-in-one at the 8th, which meant he claimed the whole pot. It was Trumper’s first-ever ace and he used his seven iron to secure it.

The breeze was up the following day for the Tom Childs Memorial Flag. This is where the competitors aim to get their flag as far around the course with their shot allowance.

Club chairman Graham Exton reached the first green with the four shots he had in hand on the course to win the cup. Roy Baker out drove Steve Jones for second after both had just an extra shot down the first.

Three players ended their rounds in the hole on the 18th, meaning a tie for fourth between Graham Foy, Jason Kidley and Tony Romeo. In the ladies’ event, Annie Williams found her way to the 18th green with her shot allocation as she secured the silverware.

In a late result from the previous weekend, Paul Jones had a best of the day 45 points on his way to taking the Division 1 prize. Another 40+ haul took victory in Division 2 as Brian Read had 42. Roger Phillips edged out Phil Hodgson on countback to win Division 3 on 39.

The seniors had to endure some tough conditions for their medal last week. Charlie Doherty was the only one in the field to match par and with it claimed a four shot victory over Roger Blackwell and George Thomas.

Two days later, the last round on the eclectic was played. This time the leader did break par as George Stratford scored a nett 69. Mike Allen was runner up on 71 and Cliff Crawford third on 74.

Brean professional Andrew March continued his excellent start to the G&S PGA season as he took victory in the medal at Stinchcombe Hill in Dursley.

He beat par by a single shot with his round of 67 and tied at the top with two other pros. This result now sees him occupy second place in the Order of Merit, just ahead of his Brean colleague David Haines who is fifth. Haines also finished inside the top 10 at Stinchcombe after his one over par 69 left him tied seventh.

? THERE were two Stablefords and a medal this week at Wedmore Golf Club with the seniors starting things off with a Stableford.

There were some good scores, particularly in Division 2 where Graham Stock came in with 41 points, two ahead of Peter Spinks, who was another two points ahead of Frank Denniston.

Division 1 saw a welcome return to form for John Viney who won with 39 points, a point better than John Hurdman, who was a further point ahead of a now fully fit Mike Munns. Phil Rogers took Division 3 with 37 points, followed by David Adams (36) and Barry Stone (35).

Clear winner of the ladies’ Stableford was Rachel Lockley, her 37 points was three better than anybody else. Saybria Sims was second in silver division on 34, with Liz Hill a further point back in third.

The finish in bronze division was close. Sue Hughes was first on 33 with Alison Buckton a point back and just beating Jenny Cornwell on countback.

There were good scores in the top two divisions in the monthly medal. Best score of the day went to Tony Ribi, his net 65 was four better than Malcolm Tanner and a further point ahead of Robert Stanley in third.

A tight finish to Division 1 saw Nigel Jones (67) win by one shot from Rich Vowles with Nick Parker a shot back in third.

Scores in Division 3 were not so good, but a steady 72 was enough to win for Terry Millard with David Stacey (73) and Steven Baker (74) filling the other places. Best of the ladies in a small field were Alison Dodkin and Louise Allen
