Kewstoke Lions defeated Berrow Reserves, with Jo Popperwell hitting the winner for Kewstoke.

Kewstoke Lions 2

Berrow Res 1

KEWSTOKE dominated the first-half of this Division 1 match, winning every ball and playing quick attacking football, but found themselves a goal down.

The home side kept pressing and a lovely move involving Joe Popperwell and John Crandon resulted in Callum Macmanus slotting home for a deserved equaliser. As the break was looming, Popperwell turned on the edge of the box and his shot found the top corner.

The second half was a physical battle against a Berrow team who tried everything to get back in the game, but Kewstoke worked hard and held on for victory, while a few chances to extend the lead went begging.

DS Securities man of the match went to the whole squad for a solid performance after four weeks off.

Banwell Res 5

Worle Res 2

BANWELL Reserves booked a place in the second round of the Vardon Cup with a hard-fought win over a spirited Worle side.

The hosts took an early lead when a Mark McKeever free kick was guided in to the visitors’ goal by Darrell Capille.

Worle drew level on 10 minutes when Jake Pickles took possession high up the pitch and his lob beat Dave Purkis from 25 yards. Banwell restored their lead when Adam Abrams was able to head in McKeever’s corner.

Banwell should have extended their lead when Paul Marquis was brought down in the box for a penalty, but Jimmy Darch missed the spot kick.

Worle equalised when the Worle striker fired past Purkis in the Banwell goal. McKeever then turned goal scorer to give Banwell a 3-2 lead at the break.

Manager Paul White changed the formation for the second half, with Russell Mitchell and Mark Jones winning the midfield battle, while McKeever, Abrams, Danny Reyes and Harry Hornigold were busy in attack.

Abrams, Jones and Hornigold all went close, but the best chance of the second half fell to Callum White who shot over from close range.

Sam Perrett put the game out of the visitors reach heading home a McKeever corner, before Hornigold was rewarded for his hard work.

McKeever’s set pieces were pinpoint, while Russell Mitchell and Paul Marquis were superb, but Waymouth Signs man of the match was Adam Abrams.

Worle Rangers 2

Nailsea Utd Colts 1

WORLE Rangers kept their winning run going with a first round Vardon Cup victory over Nailsea United Colts.

Rangers pressed Nailsea in forward areas, won the midfield battle and ensured that the pressure was on the visitors. Although neither side created any clear-cut chances in the first half, Troy Hannam’s deflected shot was the closest they came.

After the break, keeper Jakeman organised well and showed clean hands to give the excellent back four of skipper Wilson, Jake Hannam, Nott and Royce confidence. Bray, Stephens and Brinson continued to work hard and Troy Hannam, Chatterley and Westgarth mixed things up and constantly asked questions of the visiting defence.

Nailsea won a soft penalty and converted to equalise against the run of play. Midway through the half, Bray pounced on a loose ball and fired home from 25 yards for his first-ever Rangers goal and the winner.

Skipper Wilson and Brinson had good games, but keeper Matt Jakeman was awarded the Curry Garden man of the match.
