Lympsham & Belvedere seconds began their Somerset League campaign with a resounding eight-wicket win over Winscombe to collect the maximum 35 points.

On the back of pre-season victories over Wellington and Harptree, they put Winscombe into bat on a damp, green track and saw the decision pay immediate dividends as Sheppard drilled the second ball, a full toss from CJ Neate, to Brian Hosey at mid-on.

Neate and new-ball partner Matt Davis bowled good opening spells and Davis was unlucky to see two half chances go down as opener Fin Mayo looked to score freely.

The introduction of Kevin Crockett and Nilanjan Chatterjee saw Lapes (9) caught at gully off Crockett although at the other end Mayo was finding his way and dispatching the rare bad ball.

Crockett held onto a return catch to dismiss the dangerous Griffith (17) and Chatterjee accounted for Frappell (0) and Bourton (1), the latter held at mid-off by Jason Parsons.

Crockett bowled Owens (4), however Mayo stood firm and was clearly the man to get out as he passed his half-century.

Sam Jennings came into the attack and with his third ball beat Mayo`s defences to bowl him for an excellent 66, then tore through the lower order to dismiss Vowles (0), Bawden (1) and Ford (20), whose late runs lifted the visitors to 129.

An excellent bowling display saw Jennings return figures of 5-1-7-4, supported by Crockett (8-1-25-3), Chatterjee (8-0-29-2), Neate (7-2-21-2) and Davis (5-0-17-0).

L&B soon lost opener Sam Neate (0) who was unlucky to fall to an outstanding catch at point by Owens off the bowling of Griffith with the score on four.

This brought Parsons to the crease and he and Crockett made batting look relatively easy on the difficult surface, dispatching the regular bad ball away with ease mixed with resolute defence.

The pair added 72 for the second wicket and it came as a surprise when Crockett holed out to deep mid-on for 29.

But Parsons was in full flow, reaching his half century and striking the ball down the ground effortlessly and finishing unbeaten on 72, with three sixes and 12 fours, as he and Pete Hooper (8 not out) saw their side home in the 23rd over.

L&B make the trip to Shapwick & Polden next Saturday and thank match-ball sponsor Graeme Hale and the Butcombe Brewing Co for the man of the match award for Jennings.
