Lympsham suffered their first defeat of the season, losing to Fitzhead at home.

LYMPSHAM hosted Fitzhead on one of the hottest days of the year, and when Jack Luff won the toss, he had no hesitation in electing to bat first.

However, Lympsham started badly losing the two in-form openers Dave Luff (6) and Jamie Howson (10) early, leaving the home side 29-2, leaving Tom Gooding and Jack Luff to rebuild the innings.

The pair gradually got Lympsham back into a reasonable position. At the halfway stage, Lympsham were 84-2. Gooding continued to stroke to ball to all parts of the ground, but was eventually bowled for a great knock of 42, leaving Lympsham on 135-3 with 12 overs to go.

Luff was joined by Hayden Tuttiett, and Lympsham Concrete man of the match Jack Luff brought up a well deserved 50, but soon after was bowled.

Good contributions at the end from Sam Poole (10), Max Gregory (10) and Liam Morris (15 not out) allowed Lympsham to attain full batting points and post a competitive score of 203-8.

After the break, it only took Jack Luff two overs to pick up his first wicket. But from then on, nothing really went Lympsham’s way. A few dropped catches and misfields, meant Lympsham struggled to keep a firm hold on the game.

Runs started to leak, even though Gooding (1-27), Morris (1-35) and Gregory (1-38) tried to apply some pressure. The highlight of the game was an outstanding diving catch from Poole.

Luff then returned to pick up another wicket, but Fitzhead chased down the total for the loss of five wickets in just 38 overs.

This was Lympsham’s first defeat of the season, but they still remain clear at the top of the table and look to bounce back next week with a big game against second-place Frome.

THE Sunday development side travelled to Chard and captain Tom Gooding having won the toss elected to bowl.

Opening bowlers Tom Ferns (3-22) and Liam Morris (2-22) did not let the Chard batsman settle. Tom Ferns picked up two wickets in the fifth over and a third in the seventh. A change of bowling continued the pressure, with Max Gregory (2-39) and Jules Froud (0-17) unlucky not to take a wicket. Adam Micklewright finished off the Chard innings, bowling one over and taking the final two wickets with Chard finishing on 105.

In reply, Lympsham openers Gary Hutton (18) and Felix Granfield (9) got the innings off to a solid start. Two quick wickets brought Jack Luff (46 not out) and Tom Gooding (21 not out) to the crease, who set about knocking off the runs.

With one run needed and Luff on 46, a boundary was expected, but the next ball went for five wides, giving Lympsham the victory.

Lympsham Livery man of the match was Tom Ferns.
