Maddox Gould, aged 12, won the men’s singles final at Weston Tennis Club, defeating Chris Barrett in two sets.

Weston Tennis Club staged three of its tournament finals recently.

The men’s singles final was contested by Chris Barrett and 12-year-old Maddox Gould. It was the experienced left-hander Barrett who got off to a quick start, breaking the exciting youngster’s serve in the opening game.

However, Maddox broke straight back and his hard hitting enabled him to gain control breaking serve to lead 4-2 and eventually to take the first set 6-3.

The second set saw Maddox quickly go into a 4-1 lead, but Chris fought back gallantly right to the end with some battling net play. However, it was Maddox who came through to win the second set and the match 6-3, 6-2.

The ladies’ doubles was contested by the defending champions, Sabine Germane and Suzanne Taylor and challengers, Marion Erison and Jayne Starks.

Both pairs started strongly with some exciting exchanges, but it was the more experienced partnership of Sabine and Suzanne who took control winning the first set 6-1.

The second set contained some long rallies and spirited play. It ended with Sabine and Suzanne clinching the set 6-0, thus retaining their title.

The mixed doubles final was between Germane and Rob Kenna and Suzanne and Lewis Taylor. It was Suzanne and Lewis who got off to the perfect start showing some great team work which resulted in them quickly taking the first set 6-3.

The second set proved to be a much closer affair with Sabine and Rob showing some fighting spirit with some excellent net play and powerful groundstrokes which enabled them to take the set 6-2.

The final set saw Sabine and Rob retain the momentum with some solid doubles play which resulted in them going on to take the set 6-3.

Weston Tennis Club, based in Neva Road, holds regular club play sessions for adults throughout the autumn and winter and welcomes prospective members of all ages and abilities.
