WESTON'S Somerset Academy of Krav Maga hosted a national seminar for the internationally renowned Major Avi Nadia at The Campus, Weston.Major Nadia is best known as the man who taught the Israeli Forces and Intelligence services hand to hand combat and counter terrorism skills. After 9/11 he and some of his colleagues started teaching civilians these same skills.Students from all over the UK attended the seminar. Local Krav Maga and Kapap instructor, Paul Grey said: "Avi is in demand all over the world and to get him to Weston is a real coup. We are trying to introduce world-class instructors so we can all gain access to the same standard of training as specialist personnel in the forces or police."So many martial arts instructors have no experience of dealing with real violence and aggression and simply pass on dangerous or mis-understood techniques. The main thing students take away from Israeli martial arts is that you don't have to stand in strange stances or learn complicated techniques to learn to defend yourself."It's down to fearlessness and determination not katas or forms. Israeli martial arts are constantly tested in some of the most dangerous situations in the world and are renowned for the fact they work". Avi taught students a range of drills from how to survive attempted kidnap at gunpoint to realistic knife survival. The Somerset Academy of Krav Maga runs regular lessons on Mondays and Thursdays in Weston. A beginner's seminar will be run on July 23 for anyone interested in trying reality based training. Visit www.somersetkravmaga.co.uk for further information.
