MARGARET Baker is the only lady to have reached the last eight in the Clarence Indoor Bowling Club singles championship.

The recently-elected Clarence ladies’ club captain got through by virtue of a walkover conceded by Clarence men’s president Reg Flicker.

Her opponent in the quarter-finals will be Andy McMillan, who had a surprisingly comfortable second-round victory over partially-sighted player Bob Rossiter, conqueror of champion Ivan Barnbrook.

The big clash of the third round promises to be the meeting of Clarence men’s outdoor first-teamers David Stott and Trevor Pritchard.

Second-round results: David Stott bt John Edwards 21-5; Trevor Pritchard bt Jim Keay 21-5; Don Towie bt June Allard 21-10; Mike Scoins bt Carol Webb 21-13; Mick Edlin bt Mary Hawkins 21-6; Ian Baker w/o v Alan Jones; Andy McMillan bt Bob Rossiter 21-6; Margaret Baker w/o v Reg Flicker.

Although last year’s singles winners and runner-up, respectively Ivan and Pam Barnbrook, failed to survive the first round, they are going strongly in the pairs, of which they are the champions, and are through to the quarter-finals already.
