Weston Golf Club’s men’s championship was won by Matt Pearson at the weekend.

MATT Pearson won Weston Golf Club’s men’s championship last weekend which took place over two days.

The strong northerly wind, hard running fairways and some tricky pins made scoring difficult. Matt led in with an excellent gross 71 (0) including an out of bounds on the 18th. He was followed in by three other players carding a 75 – Matt Evans (0), Dave Edwards (4) and Tim Rees (6).

Showing form off their handicaps were Jack Radcliffe with a nett 65 (12) and Phil Eastman nett 68 (14) along with Tim Rees, the only players under par nett on the day.

Sunday saw some milder conditions although the earlier starting players experienced both wind and rain.

Radcliffe continued his excellent play returning an impressive nett 63 to go with the previous day’s 65 to win the Exton Plate by eight shots from runner-up Rees, who in turn was a shot clear of Eastman.

James Popham (2) played well to shoot 70 in the final round to gain second place on countback from Matt Evans, but Pearson’s excellent ball striking throughout the competition saw him prevail by four shots with scores of 71 and 72 for a total of 143.

Weston held its men’s invitation day with a 4BBB Stableford format and this was won by the son and father pairing of Steve and Lenny Thomas (Worlebury) with 43 points, on countback from Mike Brueford and his partner D Saunders (Mendip Spring), with Andy Zanelli and J Parish (Long Ashton) in third with 41 points. R Harris had a hole-in-one on the 14th.

Two days later, the Bader Cup mixed greensomes was played with the winners qualifying for the regional finals to be played at Stover Golf Club on August 18. This year’s grand final takes place in Portugal on November 6 with the winning pair from each of the 12 regional finals invited to take part.

Weston’s winners were father and daughter pairing of Rob and Susan Tate with 44 points, followed by Matt and Sally Brosnan (42), then Steve and Wendy Thomas (41).

From the ladies’ section, the Miss Apps Salver-3rd Millennium qualifier was played and was won by Kaleigh Davey with an excellent 46 points, followed by Joan Jenkinson then Zena Balcombe each with 34, with Julie Ward fourth with 33.

Sue Garrett achieved a hole in one on the third hole. Lady captain Jacqui Hall-Scott presented Sue with a certificate and commemorative badge.

? WORLEBURY seniors played three games over the last nine days, starting with a 4-3 away to Oake Manor.

They then lost to Henbury 6-2 in some closely contested games. They then beat Minehead 5.5-1.5 in windy conditions. Congratulations go to Worlebury captain John Taylor who won the nearest to the pin competition.

? WORLEBURY ladies’ weekend Stableford winner was Maxine Gardiner with 37 points and second was Helen Clarke with 36.

The Philpott Trophy winners were D Thompson and H Clarke with 39 points, runners-up were John and Jill Phillips with 38.

May Stableford: Lisa Griffiths 38 pts; Wendy Larner 37.

? TONY Richards had the round of the day in Brean Golf Club’s June monthly medal as he handed in a magnificent nett 65 to claim top spot.

His round, as well as taking the Division 1 award, also qualified him for the EGU Gold Medal. He will now wait and see if he qualifies for the national final in August.

The only other player to break 70 with their nett score on the day was Division 3 victor Vince Ford. His 69 gave him a two stroke winning margin over Mike Smith.

Division 2 required a countback to separate the leading pair. Eamonn Wynne just edged out Alan Marshall after they both recorded nett 70s. The ladies’ medal was won by Shelia Rouse after her nett 72.

The following day was the monthly Stableford and Wally Pape led the way. He amassed 43 points to win Division 3 by some distance. Runner-up was Mike Sutton on 35.

Division 2 honours went to Jerry Brueford after a card of 36 edged out Neil Barker on countback. The top division was won by Andy Chan as he beat a small entry with his tally of 30 points.

The seniors also played their monthly Stableford and the winning score was 38 points. Also on offer for the leading player was the Vic Rowe Trophy and this was claimed by Barrie Yearsley. Second place went to Tony Tissington on 37, while George Thomas rounded out the top three on 36.

The seniors’ were on the road for their latest inter-club match as they travelled to Vivary Park in Taunton. They acquitted themselves well and came away with a respectable 3-3 draw.

The main club team also visited the same venue as they played Wincanton in the Somerset Bowl and tasted success. The result of 4-1 in Brean’s favour sees them progress into the next round.

The ladies’ team played its first inter-club fixture of the season away to Taunton Vale last week. The eight player team all played well, but unfortunately ended up on the wrong end of a 2.5-1.5 result.

? IT WAS a big week for the seniors’ at Wedmore with three matches on consecutive days.

It started with a friendly against Wells and Wedmore kept up their excellent home form with a convincing 6-2 victory. On the same day, those players not in the team held a Stableford which was won on countback by Jeff Elliott whose 38 points were just enough to hold off Phil Batt in his first competition with the seniors.

The most crucial match of the week was when Wedmore met Cannington in the second round of the Somerset Bowl. The crucial match turned out to be the first one when Ray Dodkin and John Viney held on to a one shot lead on the last hole to win one up. Defeats followed for the pairings of Keith Thomas and Tony Glover and John Sanderson with Stephen Lawrence.

There was a comfortable win for Peter Rowntree and Tony Biggs (6&4), leaving the match all square with the last match still on the course. In the end, Ian Robson and Colin Boorman clinched victory with a 3&2 victory over their opponents to take Wedmore into the quarter finals where they will play either Long Sutton or Wincanton.

A more relaxed affair was the aptly named Friendly Bowl against the ladies. This year 30 players assembled from each side for a shotgun start.

Most of the games were close, but the seniors just seemed to hold the upper hand and finally they won by a comfortable 23 Stableford points, 567-544.

Ladies’ captain Jane Hewitt presented the trophy to winning Tony Biggs, but in partnership with Jenny Thomas she did have the best score for the ladies with 41 points. Richard Banks and Phil Rogers scored 44 for the seniors

? THE first hole-in-one at the new Bleadon golf course was achieved by Mrs A Flemming, who was on holiday from Nottingham.

She was staying at the caravan park on Roman Road in Bleadon, which she has done for the past 30 years. Mrs Flemming scored her ace at the seventh, which is a par three 140 yard hole on the opening morning.

Mrs Flemming will be receiving a week’s free golf on her annual visit to Bleadon next year.
