Weston Golf Club's seniors competed for the Harry Salmon Cup and Veterans Cup last Monday.

Winner of the Salmon Cup was John Dixon, who carded an impressive 43 stableford points, with second place going to Mark Fozzard with 40.

In third place was Andy Chambers on 39 followed by Dave Bickell in fourth and senior captain John Whitewood fifth, after both finished on 38.

Meanwhile the Veterans Cup was claimed by in-form Garth Wilson who scored 41 points with Terry Holden a point adrift in second.

Third place went to Ed Langford on countback from Peter Davie in fourth, after the pair both scored 38, and Dave Holder finished fifth with 37.

The seniors played a friendly fixture at Brean and found it very hard going against a host of high handicappers.

In the opening game Ed Langford and Bill Diamond were six down at the turn as their opponents, Jeff Milton and Mick Hurman went out one under par gross.

The unfortunate Weston pair lost 7&6 before clubmates Henry McGrory and Don Harris took an early advantage but were three down at the turn to Tony Oliver and Mark Elvins, eventually losing 6&4.

Match three saw acting captain Paul Chesney and Don Norris win the first hole but Brean captain John Cranley and Vince Ford were two up after nine and despite 17 pars from Chesney the home pair won 3&2.

Similarly, Bickell and Rob Filer took an early lead but a strong middle section from Trevor Pitt and Alan Evans saw them home 6&4.

Match five was very close throughout which resulted in an honourable half for Dave Meredith and John Greaves against Dave Mann and Mick Allen.

In the final game Allan Tucker and Bill Reynolds were three down after seven holes to Chris Stephens and Steve Barker but fought back to earn a half at the last. The match result was a comfortable 5-1 win for Brean.
