A JOINT Mendip Girls Under-13 and Under-14 football team are through to the semi-final of the Somerset FA Girls County Cup after beating Berrow.

It was a close and exciting game with Berrow taking advantage of Mendip's slow start and going two goals up.

Mendip fought back and in the second half Roxy Newman scored two great goals. Mendip continued to pressure Berrow, but the score remained 2-2 at the end of extra time and the game went to pentalties.

Mendip won the game 5-4 on penalties with goalkeeper Coran Lockwood making two terrific saves.

All the Mendip girls played superbly well with Alice Spearing receiving best player medal.

Bishops Lydeard 5

MENDIP Girls Under-14s were a player down through injury so took to the field with only 10 players. Lydeard took the lead with a close range shot, but Mendip hit back when Sophie Marks fired a shot from distance which beat the keeper to level the game.

Sally Cooling had several shots saved and Roxy Newman and Onzia Lucas also had chances. Lydeard scored again before Cooling was brought down in the box. Marks scored after her initial effort was parried. Lydeard scored again to go into the break 3-2 ahead.

Mendip kicked off the second half and went on the attack right away. Natasha Stanley, Marks, Newman and Lucas kept the ball in the Bishops half, while Cooling attacked at every opportunity.

Lydeard made the most of some slack defending to score again to go 4-2 ahead . Cooling scored again and suddenly Mendips defence clicked with Alice Spearing, Charlotte Wright, Abby Ewles and Beth Reasons stopping Bishops in their tracks.

Then Marks passed to Lucas who ran down the right to cross into the path of Cooling, who burst through to net her second and bring Mendip level.

Newman picked up a loose ball in the Bishops half and coolly put the ball away to give Mendip the lead. Marks put Cooling through again with an excellent pass and she hit a great shot to grab her hat-trick and put Mendip 6-4 up.

Bishops got one goal back at the end of the game and Mendip's keeper Coran Lockwood made three point blank saves in a row to deny Bishops getting anything from the game. Mendip won 6-5 and the Peek-a-Boo player of the match went to all 10 girls who all deserved it.
