Mixed doubles tournament at Woodland

Players from all sections at Woodland Tennis Club took part in a mixed doubles tournament.
A mixed doubles tournament specifically designed to bring together players from all sections of the club was held at Woodland Tennis Club for the first time.
Divided into two groups of six pairs each, 24 members played five matches to decide the group position which would determine which of the six finals they would be contesting.
What was particularly impressive was how quickly several players, relatively new to the game and the club, adapted to the pace and demands of competitive play and managed to figure prominently and successfully in the later stages of the tournament.
Before the presentation, chairman and tournament organiser, Les Treen, congratulated everyone on their level of play, especially those who are the product of club secretary, Annie Buckingham’s successful Friday morning initiative to encourage inexperienced players and beginners to attend recreational sessions.
He also thanked Jenny Purcell for providing a superb buffet lunch which helped to sustain everyone throughout the day. Elaine Edwards, the ladies’ club champion, presented all 12 winning finalists with a bottle of wine and the runners-up with a Woodland club pen.
Following positive feedback, it is hoped this all inclusive tournament will become a permanent fixture in the club’s future calendar of events.
