Mixed open at Worlebury

WORLEBURY Golf Club held their mixed open competition with 140 golfers who came from clubs as far afield as Sutton Coldfield.

Results - First Stableford and winners of the Delhorn Cup: Huw and Sue Rees (Thornbury) 44 pts; first gross and winners of the Phillips Cup: Robert and Karen Preedy (The Kendleshire) 28. Nearest the pin (ladies): Pam Burnell (Worlebury); men: Trevor Smith (Worlebury).

League fixtures got under way for the Worlebury golf teams. The first team, this year skippered by Chris Davidson, started at Mendip Spring.

The side came home defeated, three and a half to one and a half points, but with some close games, including the pairing of Wynn and Coyne, who put up a great fight going down by only one hole after being six down after the 11th.

Mark Burland’s Avalon team were next up with their second match of the season at home to Mendip Spring. The course was in superb condition for the game, but the visitors played slightly better golf on the day and won by 3-2.

The juniors, captained by Matt Blackman, followed swiftly behind, taking on Burnham, also at home and earned a creditable 3-3 draw.

The Bristol & District high-low foursomes were held at Clevedon and Worlebury entered five pairs for the event.

Results: Andy Horsburgh and John Jones (28 pts), R Godwin and Alan Haynes (30), Chris Davidson and Steve Buckley (33), Keri Allchurch and Danny O’Connor (23), Matt Blackman and Kelvin Betts (21).

In some very windy conditions at the exposed estuary course, Worlebury managed a creditable mid table position for the club on the day.

Worlebury Golf Club has been designated as one of the collection points for Weston Hospicecare’s ‘The Big Drop’.

The week-long charity event is running from May 16-23 and anyone wishing to donate any unwanted clothes, gifts, books, CDs etc can leave them at the club.

EIGHTY-eight competitors took part in Weston ladies spring open competition last week.

The weather held out for the whole day enabling all players to benefit from dry playing conditions.

In first place was a Weston team with 84 points: Pauline Lancaster, Julie Ward, Carol Menzies and Moira Parish. In second place, again a Weston with 83 points was Joan Jenkinson, Wendy Thomas, Sally Brosnan and Vicky Brewin. In third place with a combination of Weston and Isle of Wedmore ladies with 81 points were Diney Costeloe, Sue Painter, A Search and J Midgley.

Nearest the pin (bronze division): Vicky Brewin, silver division: Sally Irlam. Longest drive (bronze): C Patterson, silver: Glenda Latham.

Lady captain Carol Harris was delighted with the number of competition entries and welcomes all visitors back in October for the Autumn Berry Bowmaker competition on October 9.

WESTON juniors opened their season against Wheathill in glorious sunny, but blustery conditions and blew away the opposition with a 4-0 victory.

Sam Fernley teed up first and was soon in command closing out a 6&5 victory. Jack Roberts playing in his first game for Weston wrapped up a 5&3 win.

The first of the fourball matches had the experienced pair of Lewis King with this year’s captain Alex Fry and they cruised to an 8&6 win. The final pair of Jade Cope and Jake Coleman eked out a 2&1 win against tough opposition. Jake’s par down 17 enough to close the match.

DESPITE a brief interruption for a thunderstorm, most teams managed to complete the course at Wedmore for the Martin Bull Trophy.

Coming in third with 80 points was the team of Dom Channon, Don Edmondson, Rob Davis and John Melwani. This was one point behind the Olive family, mother and father Cathy and Martin with sons Joe and Laurie. Two points ahead were the winners, Nick Parker, Jim Crick, Nick Smith and Graham Clifford who received their trophy from Liz Bull.

No thunder for the seniors but some good scores, notably from Peter Rowntree and Eric Wallace who won Divisions 1 and 3 respectively with 42 points.

John Russell and Phillip Springfield took second and third in Division 1, places filled by Derek Osborn and Dennis Howard in Division 3.

Terry Stew took Division 2 with a subdued 35 points, just ahead of Chris McGowan and Bob Dainty.

The men joined the seniors and ladies in advancing past the first round of the county knockouts by defeating Weston 4-1 in the first round of the Somerset Bowl.

Winter finally seemed to come to an end when the final of the men’s winter pairs was played. After a close fought match, Russell Shaw and Tom Bennett just beat Danny Guyatt and Dave King by 2&1.

AFTER a weather disrupted blank week the previous week, the seniors at Brean Golf Club certainly made up for it with three fixtures in the past seven days.

First to taste success was Roger Phillips as he won the monthly Stableford. His card of 34 points was good enough to take top spot ahead of Dave Benjafield on 33. Third place went to Colin Roberts who was a further point behind.

George Stratford was victorious in the second individual event of the week as he topped the leaderboard at the conclusion of the Wally Pape Bogey Trophy.

The format means each player plays matchplay against the course and on the day the course definitely won! No player beat it and Stratford ended at one down, but won by three clear holes from John Sherwood on -4. Tony Tissington was third, but with a poorer back nine than Sherwood.

A busy week was capped off by a fine away performance for the seniors’ team at Windwhistle. They came away with a respectable 3-3 draw in some welcome and much improved weather.
