Uphill Badminton Club played four matches last week, winning two and losing two.

UPHILL B, C, E and men’s teams were in action with two wins and two losses.

The B team were at home to Portishead A and lost a close match by six rubbers to three. The team of Robin Curry, Ellie Jewell, captain Brian Hadley, Steph Hadley, Rob Morray and Kate Robinson had a poor start by losing the first three mixed rubbers in straight games.

Ellie and Steff then won the first ladies’ rubber to bring Uphill back into contention, but Robin and Brian lost a close first men’s rubber. This was followed by the Portishead ladies winning the next two ladies’ rubbers which both went to three games.

The Uphill men then won the last two men’s rubbers in straight games. The overall result does not do justice to the match as it was close and could have been won 5-4 by either team.

The C team were away to Mendipway in Division 3 of the North Somerset League and lost by nine rubbers to nil. The team of Neil Barstow, captain Fiona Singleton, Matt Valentine, Maureen Mathews, Glyn Davis and Caroline Higgins worked hard, but with no success.

The match was closer than the score would suggest with one ladies’ and one men’s rubber going to three games and a further two rubbers having game scores of 25-23 and 23-21.

The E team were at home to Portishead B and won by seven rubbers to two. This team of youngsters had 13-year-old Lauren Rickwood, Luke Morgan and Rowan Weeks (14), Emily Walker and Abbi Rickwood (16) and 18-year-old captain Callum Grayson.

These juniors, ably lead by Callum, have made excellent progress this season and played some exceptional badminton for their age. Four of the rubbers had close games and these were shared between the two teams.

The only rubbers to be lost by Uphill were the first and third ladies’ rubbers. The players to win all their rubbers were Callum, Luke and Rowan from Uphill.

The men’s team of Neil Sandifer, Paul Wright, captain Bill Ponting and Fred Brown were away to Wells City B and won by 6-0.

Two rubbers went to three games, the first was between Neil and Paul and the other between Neil and Fred. All the other rubbers were won convincingly by Uphill.
