Uphill Badminton Club’s league teams had mixed results, with two teams winning and two losing.

UPHILL Badminton Club’s B, C, E and men’s B teams were in action last week, with the C and men’s B teams winning and the other two losing.

The B team were at home to Frys A and lost a competitive match by six rubbers to three. The Uphill team had their first and third men missing and consisted of Emily Page-Symonds, Matt Potts, Harriett Birt, Robin Curry, Steph Hancocks, and Brian Hadley.

The players gave a good account of themselves against a strong Frys team, with four of the rubbers going to three games and a further three individual games going to 20 plus.

The first mixed went to three games with the Frys players eventually winning. Frys also won the next two mixed rubbers, but both had games with scores of 20 plus.

The Uphill ladies then took control with Emily and Harriet winning in straight games. The next rubber was hard fought with Harriett and Steph just losing in the third. The last ladies’ rubber also went to three games before Harriet and Steph won.

The first two men’s rubbers were won easily by Frys in straight games before Robin and Brian came back to win a hard fought last rubber.

The C team were at home to Nailsea & Yatton A and won by six rubbers to three. The C team of Matt Valentine, captain Julie O’Sullivan, Grant Kelly, Teresa Davison, Glyn Davis and Maureen Matthews got off to a good start with Matt and Julie winning the first mixed.

Grant and Teresa lost a tough second mixed before Glyn and Maureen won the third mixed. Nailsea and Yatton won the first ladies’ rubber, with the Uphill ladies winning the next two rubbers.

The Uphill men won the first two rubbers comfortably in straight games, before losing the last rubber in three games.

The junior E team whose average age is 15, consisted of Lauren Rickwood, Rohan Weekes, Chloe Palmer, Scott Booth, Alice Brett and Will Bennett, and they were away to Portishead B and lost a very close match by four rubbers to five.

The evening started well for Uphill when Lauren and Rohan won the first mixed. Portishead won the next two mixed rubbers and the first ladies’ rubber.

The Uphill pair of Lauren and Alice, who was playing her first senior league match at the age of 13, won the second rubber, but Portishead won the third rubber.

Rohan and Scott won the first men’s rubber, with Rohan and Will following this with another victory. This meant the match was tied at four rubbers each with all to play for in the last men’s, which Portishead won to complete an enjoyable evenings badminton.

The only players to win all their rubbers were Sue Tasker from Portishead and Rohan from Uphill.

The men’s B team played Wells City B away and won by five rubbers to one. The Uphill team of Carl Harrison, Luke Morgan, captain Bill Ponting and Keith Higgins all played well.

Three rubbers went to three games. The first of these resulted in Bill and Keith beating Clive Newman and Neil Thomas. In the second, Luke and Keith beat Dave Hall and Thomas and the third saw Hugh Allen and Neil Thomas beat Harrison Higgins.

The other three rubbers were won by the Uphill players in straight games. Both Bill Ponting and Luke Morgan won all their rubbers.
