Mixed start to the new season

Avenue Tennis Club’s men’s team have had a mixed start to the new season.
AVENUE Tennis Club men’s teams began their matches in the North Somerset Tennis League with a mix of results.
The men’s A team of Craig Phillips, Rob Sweet, Adam Teague and teenager Corrie Nicholls played at home to Weston A. Phillips and Sweet managed to win both their rubbers, with new partnership Teague and Nicholls losing both, leaving the match at 2-2. The match was won by Weston by the number of games won (33-32), thereby winning 6-4.
The B team of Glen Pigden, Nick Arnold, Colin Christison and Marcus Buncombe ran out 9-3 winners against Cleeve A. Avenue’s C team of club captain Richard Belfield, Tom Holder, Brian Phillips and Rich Meare lost 7-4 to an experienced Nailsea B side.
The D team travelled to local club Brent Knoll A with club coach Barry Ramsden, Ron Purcell and father and son Colin and Sam Stead. Like the first team, first pair Colin and Sam won both their rubbers with Ramsden and Purcell losing their rubbers. Both teams had 33 games each on countback, ending the night with a 5-5 draw.
The Avenue E team travelled to Winscombe B and was disappointed to lose 9-2 with youngster Harry Gough playing his first men’s league match with Lenny Cameron, Lee Fowler and Ian Parrish.
The Avenue F team, playing at home against Cheddar D, featured two teenagers - Rob Horler and Josh Lutner playing their first-ever men’s league matches with experienced players Ian Phillips and Dave Vennall and running out 8-2 victors.
The new G team of Simon Brafield, Kevin Burrow, Jason Channon and Darren Noades, played their first-ever league match against a strong Clevedon D team and came out 9-2 winners.
The club run a variety of adult social play sessions during the week. Coaching is available for juniors every night of the week and for adults on Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons.
