Uphill Badminton Club’s teams enjoyed a mixed week of results.

UPHILL Badminton Club had two senior teams and two junior teams in league action last week, with the senior men’s A team winning and the C team losing.

The juniors followed a similar pattern with the Under-15s winning and the Under-18s losing.

The C team were home to Mendipway and were defeated by six rubbers to three. The team of Julie O’Sullivan (captain), Matt Potts, Fiona Singleton, Billy Fear, Maureen Matthews and Glyn Davis, got off to a good start by winning the first two mixed rubbers and then the first ladies’ to put them 3-1 ahead.

Unfortunately for the Uphill team that was the end of their success as they succumbed to a 6-3 defeat.

The men’s A team continued their winning ways defeating Wells City B team 6-0. The team of Carl Harrison, Neil Sandifer, Paul Wright and Ian Gilmore (captain) all played well and won five of the rubbers in straight games.

The only rubber to go to three games was between Ranga Hariharan and Naz Ali from Wells and Carl and Neil and the Uphill pair won the deciding game 21-15.

The Uphill junior badminton club has entered teams in both the Under-15 and Under-18 Avon Badminton Leagues. The teams have to consist of four players, who each have to play one singles rubber and three doubles. The number of games won by the team determines the final result.

Their first Under-15 and Under-18 matches were at home against St Ursulas Junior Badminton Club.

The Uphill Under-15 team consisted of Ryan Collins, James Jeremiah, Dong Hao and Anna Bickell, who all played well and won their match by 17 games to five. Unfortunately, St Ursulas were a player short for this match so had to concede eight games. Uphill player Anna Collins played for St Ursulas to give everybody a game and counting her games the result was 16-9.

The singles were close with Uphill winning six games to St Ursulas four. Uphill proved much stronger in the doubles, winning 10-5. Uphills Dong Hao, playing his first-ever match, was the only player to win all his rubbers, with support from Anna, Ryan and James.

The Under-18 team had several players missing, and included two players under-13 who played well for their age. The team consisted of Luke Morgan (captain), Sam Hedges, Beth Dunning and Dan Corbett.

Luke did well holding the team together despite them losing by 10-13. The Uphill team started well by winning the four singles matches by five games to four. But St Ursulas dominated the doubles, with only Luke and Beth and Luke and Dan able to win their rubbers, so were beaten by 9-5 in the doubles.

The only player to win all their rubbers was St Ursulas Camilla Lee, who played some excellent badminton.
