TWO top West Country tennis players will be visiting Winscombe Tennis Club to help celebrate the completion of a new 17,000 lighting system covering four of the six courts.
Dean Cornish, who achieved national and world rankings during his career as a professional player, and John Cooksley, former captain of both the Devon junior county cup squad and Cardiff University’s first team, will be staging an exhibition match.
Dean is now director of DC Tennis which provides professional coaches at a number of Somerset clubs including Winscombe, while he himself coaches a number of county, British and international players.
He began playing competitive tennis when he was eight and represented the county from the age of 10, while in later years he partnered British No 1 Andrew Castle.
Winscombe club chairman Peter Hucker said: “We are delighted that two such distinguished players have agreed to help us celebrate the installation of our new floodlights, and we hope to welcome a large number of both members and non-members to our courts to watch.
“The lights are a huge investment by the club, but we had little choice as the old ones were nearly 21 years old. The new ones are a great improvement and we are confident they will give good service for years to come.”
The exhibition match is on the evening of November 13 after which there will be club play followed by refreshments.
