Hornets Colts 38 ptsRedruth Colts 24 ptsAT A BITTERLY cold Hutton Moor, Hornets entertained a strong Redruth side that have just qualified for the last 16 of the National Colts Cup.Showing no regard for their reputatio, Hornets started the stronger of the two sides and had Redruth on the back foot from the kick off. After a couple of missed opportunities, Oli Shepard scored from a classic No 8 pick up and drive from a five metre scrum. This was followed quickly by another, from Bobby Hewlitt, who intercepted a pass on the halfway line and raced clear of the chasing defence. Both tries converted by Nick Summers. The dangerous Redruth backs started slowly to get into the game and scored a well worked try, sending their winger over in the corner. The Hornets forwards responded well to the score, and after a period of sustained pressure Matt Parker drove over to touch down. With another conversion from Nick Summers, Hornets took a 21-7 lead into the break.Hornets carried their momentum into the second half and were well on top scoring two more tries without reply. A fine dummy and step inside saw debutant Ashley Ebbs cross over and a characteristic charge from Sonny Haines the other. With the conversion from Nick Summers the score was now 33-7. Hornets, however, became complacent giving the ball away far too easily, which Redruth took full advantage of scoring three tries in quick succession. The Hornets, after some calming words from Coach Andy Francis, rallied and scored the final try of the game, a mercurial interception from scrum-half Andy Lund. This was an outstanding result from the Colts, with special praise going to man of the match Oli Shepard.
