CHEDDAR Tennis Club staged an open tournament during half term for nine and 10-year-olds playing mini green level tennis and 10 to 12-year-olds playing yellow ball.

Some of the best youngsters in Somerset were joined by competitors from around the West Country and South Wales. Entries for the boys’ events were strong, but rather disappointing on the girls’ side.

As a result, the organisers were able to run under-12 boys’ events at both grade four and grade five level and the mini green tournament was run as a round robin mixed competition.

The under-12 tournaments ran true to form with the top seeds winning both events. In the grade four, Somerset’s Hamish O’Mahony beat Thomas Davies from South Wales in an absorbing match. In the grade five event, Lewis Oram was too strong for all his rivals and took the title from Finlay McDonald in an all-Avon final.

The mini green tournament proved to be a close contest between Amelia Davies and Matthew Crofts of Somerset and Devon’s Ben Abrahams, with Ben winning through in the end.

Full tournament results - Mini green: Ben Abrahams (winner), Amelia Davies (runner-up), Matthew Crofts (third); boys’ under-12 grade 4: Hamish O’Mahony beat Thomas Davies 5-4 (7-5), 4-1; boys’ under-12 grade 5: Lewis Oram beat Finlay McDonald 4-0, 4-2.
