Weston beach is an ideal venue, even for beginners, with few snags or dangers for anglers, and clear visibility for WSMSAA's team of safety conscious stewards.

For the more experienced, a large entry means that there is still challenge and opportunity to demonstrate their skills. Sam Rodgers, then 13, won in 2007 and won a silver medal fishing for England Youth in Europe the following year.

Previous winners of Champion's Shield included a five-year-old, (from a fishing family) and a 13-year-old who had sea fished once before but hooked a 5lb bass.
