Over 50 junior tennis players entered their four day open singles tournament held at Cheddar Tennis Club.

CHEDDAR Tennis Club held a four day open singles tournament for juniors, with over 50 entries from around the west country.

Some of Somerset’s best young players took part and there were several notable local successes. Weare brothers Robbie and Kieran Davies both reached the finals of their events, as did Vanessa Brill of Mark. Cheddar junior Amy Rossiter went one better, winning the girls singles titles at both Under-14 and Under-16.

Full results - Under-12 grade 4 boys: Ben Procter (Oxford) bt Jonathan Barber (Somerset) 4-0, 4-0; grade 5 boys: Joel Greatrex (Devon) bt Robbie Davies (Somerset) 4-1, 4-0.

Under-14 grade 4 boys: Ed Giles (Wiltshire) bt Kieran Davies (Somerset) 4-2, 0-4, 1-0 (10); 1grade 5 boys: Aziz Ali (Avon) bt Matthew Alexander (Avon) 4-1, 4-0; grade 4 girls: Amy Rossiter (Somerset) bt Vanessa Brill (Somerset) 4-0, 4-1.

Under-16 grade 4 boys: James Wilson (Somerset) bt William Richards (Cornwall) 4-5 (5), 4-1, 1-0 (7); grade 4 girls: Amy Rossiter (Somerset) bt Vanessa Brill (Somerset) 5-3, 4-1.

With the players now back at school, Cheddar’s winter coaching programme is restarting. Junior group coaching is on Fridays after school and on Saturday mornings plus midweek performance squads.

Adult coaching for improvers and rusty racquets is on Wednesday evenings and Friday mornings, with a new club play session on Thursday evenings open to non-members as well as members.
