Cheddar Tennis Club secretary Helen Brill was presented with the Ace Service Award for outstanding service.

AT Cheddar Tennis Club’s annual meeting, secretary Helen Brill was presented with the Ace Service Award for outstanding service to the club over the past year.

The club also congratulated Helen’s daughter Vanessa, aged 16, for her achievements last year in which she won the Under-18 girls’ singles at the Somerset County Championships and represented the county at both Under-18 and adult levels.

Vanessa is expected to be a regular member of Cheddar ladies’ A team competing in Division 1 of the North Somerset League this summer.

Elections to the club’s management committee included Jennie Colton, who takes over as chairman, having previously been club secretary for many years. Dave Fontaine rejoins the committee as facilities officer and new committee member Roger Dennis takes on the role of tournament organiser.

Following her election, Jennie said the immediate priorities for the club were celebrating its 90th anniversary with a tennis marathon and barbecue over the weekend of June 13-15 and providing more opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to play.

She said: “Tennis is a sport for all. Whether you are a youngster picking up a racquet for the first time, a talented junior, experienced senior or someone who just has not played since schooldays, Cheddar is a friendly club with a range of coaching classes, social tennis and competitive matches to suit all interests.”
