WET conditions failed to dampen the enthusiasm of Weston Wheelers at their latest club event.Six of the plucky seven who turned out produced personal best times on the Cross-Brent Island course.Mark Ashurst sped round the course at 28mph to finish with a new fastest ever time of 21.18 for 10 miles. The win saw him chalk up his 10th successive victory in the Wheeler's midweek season-long championship, giving him 100 points and a commanding lead in the championship.Steve Chmiewliski, who is currently enjoying a purple patch, sliced almost a minute off his best time to coast past the timekeeper in 23.06, an average speed of just under 26mph. Third place went to Rich Harrison (23.34) who also produced his best time ever, and there were personal best times for Matt Dell (23.41) and Mark Nicholson (24.51).The seventh finisher was Kyra Thorpe who returned to racing after three weeks off the bike, finishing in 26.10.With Ashurst favourite to retain the midweek championship, Steve Chmiewliski has opened up a 14 point in second place with 74 points, with Rich Harrison's recent spell of good form moving him up to third place with 60 points. Rob Heathcote and Wayne Baker, who did not race, hold fourth place on 50 points.Steve Chmiewliski took an excellent 14th place in the stamina-sapping Dragon Sportif ride, a gruelling 160km race over the Brecon Beacons and Rhondda mining valleys.He completed the gruelling event in a superb 5hrs 5mins 5secs. Team mate Kieron Ward finished in 5.06.18 for 18th place. The two Weston riders were among a huge starting entry of 804 riders.
