Weston Squash Club B team make a promising start to the new season.
WESTON Squash and Racketball Club B team made a promising start against Bristol Lawn Tennis Squash Club at Redland.
Fielding a young team, Weston started well with the experienced James Lynn winning a thrilling match 3-2 with the final game going down to the final point. Unfortunately, the evening went downhill from then onwards as the next three Weston players lost without winning the game.
All players including Weston College student Harry Lane battled hard, but were up against some experienced players. It was left to George Weston to restore some pride with a 3-1 victory.
Weston picked up six points in their bid to keep hold of their Division 1 status.
The C team have kicked off their new Bristol and District Squash League Division 2 season with a well-deserved victory against Lansdown from Bath.
After a cautious start, Brian Dudley began to fight back, but was unable to sustain the comeback. Rob Fryer was unfortunate to come up against a strong player and the opposition went into an early two-match lead.
Things began to turn round after some consistent hitting from Allan Milnes who managed a 3-0 victory. The team’s two strongest players, Terry Norman and Natalie Lawrence, both overcame their respective opponents to clinch the tie for Weston.
The D team played their first match of the season and were significantly beaten by Whitchurch Imperial B.
Although beaten 18-4 there were positive aspects to take from the performance. The highlight was a great performance from young Weston College student Joe Radcliffe.
Playing at No 2, he came back from 2-1 down to win a thrilling game in the last. The other members of the team put in stirling performances, but only Graham Quick managed to win a game.
