Cheddar FC chairman Matt Postins says Saturday’s 2021-22 season opener against Tytherington Rocks is about putting the past behind them and “being the football family they are” to achieve their “ultimate goal” of reaching the Toolstation Western League Premier Division.

It is a busy first month of the season with nine games, especially the first four, three of which are at home including newly promoted sides The Rocks and Gillingham Town.

Postins has revealed everyone will have to wear faces masks in the clubhouse, be socially distanced and table service will not run but the bar will open as normal.

“It’s quite nice to have some new teams in there. We enjoy playing all the fixtures, we play some lovely clubs and are welcomed at lovely clubs,” he said.

“We just want to welcome people back to the club really. We have been too long closed. We want to hold a safe environment that’s the most important thing, keep everyone safe.

“(We are) following all the guidelines set up by the league and government. We want to make the club a safe place to enjoy.

"We've now got three sides of the pitch to be able to view the game from. We've got plenty of space for everybody and for people to move about. We are hoping for good things this season.”

The Cheesemen have seen a number of changes on and off the pitch with Craig Mawford replacing Shaun Potter last autumn and Mike Dangerfield named as his assistant.

And Cheddar have been involved in a busy, unbeaten, pre-season as they have drawn and beaten Worle, before triumphs over Uphill Castle, Street and Winscombe.

But Postins says his eyes are firmly on the future and believes his side can have a really good campaign.

“It’s about putting the last couple of seasons behind us and moving forward,” he added.

“We’ve got what I consider to be our new manager in place, for his first season in charge, Craig Mawford. I’m really looking forward to be working with him because he’s a lovely lad and very knowledgeable.

“I wish him and all our teams all the best. They have stuck together throughout this dreadful time and we are really looking forward to the season to get up and running again and being the football family we are.

“We've got a new renewed vigour at the club. We were really sorry to see Shaun Potter leave and I really wish him all the best at Wells City. He’s a very knowledge manager.

“With Craig at the helm now we can hopefully achieve our ultimate goal which is to get in the Premier Division.”
