C & C Pythons took top spot in the Division 1 table with a hard fought 7-3 win over close rivals Vets A.

IN the Weston and District Table Tennis League, C & C Pythons took top spot in the Division 1 table with a hard fought 7-3 win over close rivals Vets A.

Three players had two wins each - Pythons’ Andy Elliott beat Colin Lewis and Gary Evry. Bill Bruton was successful against Peter Butterworth and Evry. Vets’ Butterworth beat Elliott and Kiem Mu. A close doubles went to Elliott and Mu 9-11 in the fifth against Butterworth and Lewis.

C & C Vipers’ Bill Atkinson achieved three singles by beating Trevor Jones and Phil Yates in three, but found Winsc Renegades’ Paul Hayward a tough proposition with five close games. Beth Atkinson and Mike Withyman with two each, fell to Hayward. Despite Yates and Hayward’s winning the doubles, the match went to Vipers 7-3.

Totterdown Demons are doing well in their first Division 1 season and enjoyed an 8-2 win over Totterdown C. Jason King and Graham Cheeseman won all three, Nigel Andrews lost out to Garry Chell. There was some consolation for Totterdown, when Chell and Mark Price won the doubles against King and Cheeseman.

In Division 2, it was a tough match for Totterdown Flamingos against C & C Banwell B. Top Scorer Phil Orchard beat Banwell’s Max Bretherton and Mike Skidmore in two, but needed all his skills to come out on top against Rick Hutchinson 11-6 in the fifth.

Luda Cronin and Trevor Williams collected points from Banwell’s Bretherton and Skidmore, but Banwell ran out 22-16 winners.

C & C Banwell A’s young team fought well against the more experienced Vets C. Taking points from John Barcham and Len Noble, Alex Chandler won one leg from Gary Evry. Banwell’s Chandler and Skidmore came close in the doubles, losing narrowly 8-11 in the fifth. Vets won 28-13.

In the Archdale Cup, Vets A had a tough match against Winsc Rebels to keep their place at the top of Group A. Peter Butterworth (1) equalised against Dave Hunt (1) in the eighth. Colin Lewis (3) sealed the match by beating Rebels’ Mike Baker (6) in the final games. Vets won 5-4.

Winsc Rebels and C & C Banwell B started out on equal terms in a match which could have gone to either side. John Thurlon (12) took the seventh against Rob Hansen (4), followed by Mike Skidmore (14) which left the teams on equal terms. Rebels’ Mike Baker (6) against Hannah Cope (12) was an exiting finish, Baker taking it 17 and 20 to give Rebels a 5-4 win.

In Group B, Vets C won a narrow 5-4 victory over top of the group Totterdown Demons, just managing to keep ahead until Gary Evry (10) clinched the result by beating Jason King (4). Top scorer was Demons’ Graham Cheeseman (3) with three, though losing one game each to Evry and Mark Treasure (11).

Two wins by C & C Vipers’ Bill Atkinson (-1) and Beth Atkinson (7) over C & C Banwell A’s Alex Chandler (13) and Katy Groom (15) got Vipers off to good start, reversed by Jack Brent (11) in the third beating Max Jeremiah (3).

Brent had an excellent match, also beating both Beth and Bill Atkinson. Jeremiah scored the deciding point against Chandler giving a 5-4 match win.
