Weston Players 2

Worle Rangers 4

WORLE Rangers battled their way through to the semi-finals of the Vardon Cup with a deserved victory over Weston Players.

Rangers took the lead when Chatterley fed Stephens, who fired home from the edge of the area. Soon after, Rangers gifted Players an equaliser against the run of play. The visitors were punished again as Players stabbed home at the far post for a 2-1 lead. Rangers dug deep and equalised when Dale’s trickery was rewarded as a fine ball found Stephens who slotted into the corner for 2-2.

Rangers settled and Chatterley’s work-rate was rewarded as a fine effort was turned into his own net by Skinner and the game turned. Just before half-time, Young hit the post as Rangers began to get on top.

After the break, the defence of Nott, Royce, Wilson and Imrie gave nothing away, backed up by the organisation from Jakeman. Willment and Martin Williams were introduced and the pace on both flanks stretched the home side.

Rangers made the game safe when Stephens fed Willment, who evaded two challenges and calmly finished.

Matt Wilson and John Imrie were both excellent at centre-back, but the Curry Garden man of the match went to Jamie Stephens.

Wrington-Redhill Res 3

Westland Utd Res 0

WRINGTON-Redhill of Division 5 took on Westland United of Division 3 in this Knockout Cup tie.

Winger Dan Tempan put a number of great crosses into the box and on 20 minutes, it was Tempan’s fine work that earned Wrington a penalty, which was coolly converted by Chris Vowles.

It wasn’t long before they went two up when striker Mick Edmunds powered a great header into the top corner of the net, taking Wrington in at half-time two up.

In the second half, Westland proved dogged opponents and goalkeeper Jon Burnett pulled off a couple of fine saves to ensure Wrington kept their advantage intact.

With 10 minutes to go, Vowles added his second and Wrington’s third to take the home side into the next round.

Wrington’s Bill Gough man of the match award went to keeper Jon Burnett.

Kewstoke Lions 3

Clevedon Utd Res 0

AFTER another long break from the bad weather, Kewstoke were satisfied with this Division 1 performance which gave them three points.

The home side dominated the first-half, but could only take a single goal advantage into the break after full-back Tom Dancey’s long-range strike.

Clevedon should have equalised after the break and this fired Kewstoke back into action. Callum Macmanus slotted home after the Clevedon keeper tried to dribble the ball out of the box.

Kewstoke sustained further pressure from Clevedon, but wrapped the game up when Phil Hockey pounced on a rebound.

DS Securities man of the match went to Alex Blake.

Cleeve West Town A 1

Banwell Res 9

BANWELL Reserves got back to winning ways after a four-week lay off with this convincing win over Cleeve West Town.

Nick Daniels and Mark McKeever were heavily involved in the early play and combined to set up Mark Jones, who bagged himself a hat-trick in the opening 10 minutes.

Daniels’ 30-yard through ball found Adam Abrahams, who outpaced his marker to score. A rare lapse in concentration from Banwell’s back line saw Ryan Northmore beaten with a close range shot.

Russell Mitchell and James Lucas both went close, before Northmore made three fine saves. Daniels made it five before the break with a good finish.

After the break, 16-year-old Joe Brett came on. Jones took his tally to four after Roger Mitchell, Callum White and Brett combined with some neat passing.

The visitor’s backline of Mitchell, Paul Marquis, Sam Perrett and Mark Pennington soaked up the pressure as Cleeve tried to get back in the game. Brett helped himself to a brace before Russell Mitchell rounded off the scoring with a 25 yard shot.

There were impressive displays from Marquis, Daniels, Perrett and Brett, but the Roy Hart Motors man of the match was Mark Jones.

PRIORY Rangers, who play in the Weston and District Football League Division 5, are searching for a new manager.

The current team boss is stepping down and the club are keen to appoint an enthusiastic replacement.
