Worle Rangers knocked out last season’s county champions in the first round of the Somerset Cup.

Worle Rangers 4

Barrington 2

WORLE Rangers bounced back from a narrow defeat last week and knocked out last seasons county champions to progress to the second round of the Somerset Cup.

The hosts were on the back foot for the first 10-15 minutes, before they took the lead. Some great link-up play between Backhouse and Green found the returning Charlie Dugmore, who netted his first goal of the season.

The well-organised back four of Liddiard, Powell, Coleman and Brown kept Barrington at bay for most of the first-half, with keeper Kevin Hockey commanding his area.

Rangers doubled their lead within minutes of the second half when Bobby Dugmore beat two players before being brought down, with Andy Young smashing the resulting free kick home from 35 yards.

Bobby Dugmore got himself on the score sheet moments later, as he finished from close range after a great run by Mitch Davis. Rich Dubery had a chance to make it four, but could only slice Davis’ cross wide from close range.

With the game under control, Rangers were caught napping by some great one-touch football from Barrington with a forward giving Hockey no chance.

Rangers re-grouped and Dubery made up for the earlier missed chance by his first for the club and Rangers fourth goal, following a fine through ball from Chris Brinson.

Barrington committed men forward in hope of a comeback and managed a late consolation goal, but Rangers go through to the next round following a great team performance.

The Curry Garden man of the match went to Tom Backhouse.

Marnhall 2

Banwell Res 2

BANWELL Reserved travelled to Marnhall in Dorset for the first round of the county cup.

The visitors played some slick football and dominated the encounter and should have been comfortably in the lead. It took the introduction of Wayne Davies, who travelled 60 yards and go past four players to beat the Marnhull goalkeeper.

The home team levelled against the run of play, but Banwell pressed and got their reward on 80 minutes with a fantastic effort from Daniel Clerk. The home team levelled again with just a few minutes left.

The game went into extra time. Again Banwell dominated both periods, but surrendered several good chances. Joe Rout made two good saves in the penalty shoot-out and it was left for Will Hall to net the last penalty to take Banwell through to the next round.

The Crossville man of the match went to Joel Page.

Portishead Town A 2

Dynamo Locking 2

DYNAMO Locking maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a credible away draw at Portishead Town.

Dynamo took the lead when a Mitch Corrick through ball set Matty Hollow away and he showed great composure to slot it past the keeper.

Further chances came and went for Dynamo before they got their second goal. Portishead cleared a corner and Corrick played the ball back into the area which allowed Hollow to score again.

The second half saw Portishead reply with a long-range strike with 20 minutes to go and they equalised with just under 10 minutes remaining. Only a wonder save from Dynamo keeper Matt Burland stopped them going behind.

It finished 2-2 and left Dynamo feeling frustrated when they should have picked up three points.

The Raddy’s Café Bar man of the match went to Matty Hollow.

Wrington Redhill A 1

Clapton-in-Gordano A 3

NEWLY-formed Wrington Redhill A welcomed Clapton to their temporary Congresbury home for their first game in the Weston and District League.

The home side took the lead against the run of play when McMullen when fouled on the edge of the box and scored from the resultant free kick. James Marshall went close before Clapton scored twice before the break.

In the second half, Wrington grew in confidence and played some of their best football with Tom Lucas regularly threatening the Clapton defence. Matt Lenny had the best effort with a well struck volley from outside the box.

Clapton should have extended their lead, but stand in keeper Seaman saved a penalty. However, they put the game beyond question with five minutes remaining after scoring from a free kick.

Wrington had further chances by McMullen and Lucas cleared. Man of the match was Sam Fowkes.
