The Somerset Rebels duo of Cory Gathercole and Sam Masters look to take top spot at the Premier League Pairs Championship.

THE Somerset Dickies Rebels take a break from Premier League action tomorrow (Fri) when they stage the Premier League Pairs Championship, one of the major speedway championship meetings of the season.

The meeting brings together the top riders from 10 of the Premier League’s 14 clubs, each club represented by two out of their top three riders as determined by their averages.

The 10 clubs are split into two groups of five, with the top two from each of the groups going through to the sudden death semi-final stage, the winners of each semi-final then meeting in the grand final.

Remarkably, despite this being the fifth time that Somerset has staged the event, they are yet to experience the glory of winning the championship, though they have finished on the podium in three out of the previous four years.

Somerset will be represented by Cory Gathercole and Sam Masters, Gathercole being part of the Rebels duo that finished in third place in last year’s staging of the event, which was won by Sheffield, who will be amongst the favourites for the 2011 crown.

The meeting always attracts a large crowd, coming as it does the night before the British Speedway Grand Prix which is held at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, and fans are advised to arrive in good time for the scheduled start of 7.30pm (with the rider parade taking place at 7.15pm) in order to avoid the disappointment of missing any of the action, club promoter Debbie Hancock explains;

Teams - group 1: Rye House (Jordan Frampton, Chris Neath); Glasgow (Joe Screen, James Grieves); Leicester (Richard Sweetman, Richard Hall); Newcastle (Derek Sneddon, Stuart Robson); Workington (James Wright, Rusty Harrison).

Group 2: Somerset (Sam Masters, Cory Gathercole); Sheffield (Ricky Ashworth, Shane Parker); Ipswich (Kevin Doolan, Taylor Poole); Edinburgh (Kevin Wölbert, Craig Cook); Redcar (Jason Lyons, Aaron Summers).
