Somerset Rebels compete in their 20thh season of speedway racing in 2019 and to commemorate such an auspicious anniversary a number of special initiatives are being planned throughout the season.

The launch will be a special challenge match hosted at the Oaktree Arena against near neighbours Poole Pirates on Wednesday April 3 – a fixture which not only raises the curtain on both clubs’ seasons, but one which pitches last year’s Premier league knockout cup winners against last term’s Premier league champions.

That meeting will be followed up by a special event on the Saturday April 6 when the club will stage a special Anniversary Dinner, with celebrity guest speakers and feature invited riders who have proudly donned the Rebels colours, since the club was launched in 2000.

The club, co-owned by the Mayor of Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge Bill Hancock, and run by his daughter Debbie, has experienced racing across all three divisions of British speedway and will begin their second stint in tier two after making the decision to step back from the SGB Premiership during the winter despite having enjoyed two hugely competitive campaigns in the top flight.

Speaking of the forthcoming events Debbie said: “2019 is going to be a big season for us and we aim to being doing several initiatives that will appeal to all age groups.

“Our opening fixture against Poole would, ordinarily, have been the Premiership Shield had we remained in the same division, so having our good friends along from Dorset to help launch our 20th year seemed a natural fit.

“Especially as we have had many connections in the past – Jack Holder, Brady Kurtz, Josh Grajczonek, Todd Kurtz and now Chris Harris and Nico Covatti – to name those that will be involved in the meeting, an event which we are putting out for a special one-off sponsorship and I would be happy to discuss details with any interested parties.”

Around 130 different riders have been signed by the club that has ridden in excess of 400 meetings to date and the club have plans to select an all-time Favourite top 20 list to commemorate throughout the season.

The 2019 Rebels squad includes Henry Atkins, Dimitri Berge, Nico Covatti, Chris Harris, Todd Kurtz, Anders Rowe and Rory Schlein.

*The Somerset Rebels compete in the SGB Championship the second tier of British speedway’s three-tier set-up, and race from March to October at the Oak Tree Arena, Bristol Road, Edithmead, near Highbridge, Somerset.

The club’s sponsors include Cases, Salt Express, WNS Network Services, TQ Exel, Amdaris and The Oaktree.
