ON a wet and heavy pitch Clevedon played outstanding rugby to beat second in the table and take Brixham's home unbeaten record.
Clevedon kicked off down the slope and applied all the early pressure. The forwards, well led by captain John Potts, got stuck into the opposition and soon dominated the rucks and mauls. A blindside break put Chris Cates free to slide in over in the corner for a well taken try.
Brixham, who were playing second fiddle, got on the scoreboard with a penalty. Clevedon's line-out worked well with Danny Williams pitching on a sixpence as they led 5-3 at the break, but the lead should have been more.
The home supporters were now relishing the fact that with the slope they would get on top and win the game. This was not to be, because without the ball you can do nothing. The Clevedon pack rose to the occasion by dominating the scrums and all areas of forward play. The front row of Potts, Williams and Stone were dynamic.
Ben Chase and Ryan Smith grafted and in the conditions the back row of Roger Birkin, Harvey Russell and Owen Biggins were always in the mix. Despite all this Brixham took the lead with another penalty.
A clever kick through by Mike Lowis saw Owen Biggins sprint on to the ball to score a try, which Steve Johnson converted, but Brixham hit back with their third penalty. With time running out another deft kick through by Lowis was again seized upon by Biggins to score his second try, Johnson again adding the points.
Although it was a forward dominated game, Clevedon's backs defended and kicked well, with Tom Thie orchestrating things from fly-half. Simon Johns stood out in midfield and Ben Hazeldine was sound at full back In between all this Joe Williams at scrum half foraged all afternoon.
Next Saturday, Clevedon are home to Chosen Hill, kick-off 2.30pm.
