HORNETS travelled to Wellington to play their first full match of the season against the team they had beaten in the Somerset County Cup final at the end of last season.
Hornets always looked in control and opened the scoring when full-back Andrew Wheller burst clear to score an unconverted try after 20 minutes.
The visitors soon added a second try when Ben Reseigh’s strong carry set fly-half Connor Davidson free to offload to the supporting Sam Balkham to dive over the line to make it 10-0 at the break.
The second half saw the introduction of sizeable duo Connor Baker and Dan Ogden. After another foray into the Wellington 22, full-back Conor Littlewood’s outrageous dummy fooled the defenders as he strolled in at the corner for another unconverted try.
Hornets’ fourth try came when wingman John Xanh scooped up Adam Francis’ clever kick through for a clear run to the line to put the Hornets 20 points clear. On his 18th birthday, Davidson passed to Kieran Ward to dive in for their final try.
Wellington hit back with a late converted try when a crossfield kick bounced up nicely into the arms of their left wing who ran in unopposed at the posts.
Prop Ben Reseigh was awarded the Raddy’s Bar man of the match award.
On Sunday, the Colts take on Coney Hill Under-18s in their first Gloucester League match of the season (2pm).
