HORNETS have appointed a new senior coach for the new season. Brian Free joins the South West 2 side after a highly successful playing and coaching record in South Wales. A former centre with Cardiff youth, St Albans and Penarth, a serious knee injury prematurely ended his playing career. Brian was also an amateur boxer achieving representative honours at county and national level. For the past seven years Brian has been on the coaching staff at Welsh Premiership side Glamorgan Wanderers, progressing from the Youth team through to the Development Squad and Assistant First XV team coach. Commenting on his appointment, Brian has been pleased with the turnout at training over the past two weeks and is confident Hornets can rebuild after a disappointing last season. While achieving an excellent run of results in the second half of the season, this was not enough to make up for a poor period up to Christmas. Ultimately only a restructuring of the leagues prevented the side being relegated into the Western Counties division. While a couple of faces will be missing from last season's squad, including outside-half Dave Litt who has joined National 3 Dings Crusaders, several exciting new players are staking a claim for first team selection. The side will again be led by lock Phil Hogarth, with Dave Jones and Simon Jones captaining the second and third teams respectively. This season sees added interest in the league with three local clubs joining Hornets in SW 2, Clevedon having been relegated from SW1, together with Yatton and Barton Hill, both of whom achieved promotion from the Western Counties league.Pre-season trial games have been organised with Caerphilly the visitors to Hutton Moor on August 18 and Chepstow on August 25. Hornets' first league game is away to Taunton on September 8, followed by a home fixture with Yatton. In cup competitions, Hornets have a bye in the first round of the Bristol Combination Cup and travel to SW2 side Newton Abbot in the national Intermediate Cup. This match is scheduled for October 13.Training is held every Tuesday and Thursday at Hutton Moor starting at 7pm. New and former players alike will be made welcome. Visit www.hornetsrugby.net
