Hornets 20 pts Bridgwater 29 ptsIN the final of the Somerset Blackthorn Cup, played at Yatton, Bridgwater, who play two leagues above Hornets, were always the favourites, but it was not as easy as they might have thought with a spirited Hornets holding them close.Hornets were not intimidated and straight from the kick-off won a line-out on halfway for Matt Vaughan to break through and set up a move which saw Chris Disney touch down after seven minutes and Mark Mansfield adding the conversion from the touchline.After that, Hornets took control and won much ruck and maul ball and the little Bridgwater possession was disrupted by well-organised Hornets' defence, but the Bridgwater power eventually told when George went over in the corner following a break by centre Soolerfai for an unconverted try.Hornets again took the game to Bridgwater and it seemed they might stay in front at the break, but a rolling maul from a line-out saw Bridgwater's James Bryant cross for a try on the stroke of half time with Manupenu converting for a 12-7 interval score.Early in the second half, Bridgwater pushed themselves further in front when they stole a line-out and moved the ball wide for Soolerfai to add an unconverted try in the corner. Bridgwater were enjoying their best spell and 10 minutes later, Soolerfai broke the Hornets' defence and put Hancock over under the posts for Manupenu to add the conversion.Hornets were not about to roll over and came straight back with Mike Panoho crashing over under the posts and Mansfield added the conversion. With their tails up, Hornets kept on the offensive with Mansfield going close with a couple of penalty attempts before he made no mistake with a third on 70 minutes, and with only five minutes left, he brought them within four points with another penalty attempt.Bridgwater took advantage of Hornets' need to add points, and scored from a breakaway when Purcell went over from a rolling maul in the last move of the game.
