Hornettes girls’ show passion and spirit in defeat

Despite losing both games, Hornettes Girls Under-13s and 15s showed passion and spirit.
HORNETTES Under-13s and 15s girls travelled to Minehead and despite losing both games, showed passion and spirit.
The Under-13s kicked off first and Minehead started the game strongly with a very quick try. From the back of the scrum, the ball was given to Jenna Lee, who sprinted through the Minehead defence to score.
Minehead can back strongly, but superb tackling from Miriam Bailey and Tianna Franks made scoring for Minehead hard work. Hornettes spotted a gap to which Paige Swain broke through and scored.
Minehead came back from this and worked Hornettes from side to side. breaking the line and scoring several times.
After the break, good support play by Lee and Ella Hutchinson saw them both score. Once again, Minehead were able to work the defence and make gaps to which they scored from.
The visitors came back one last time and from good rugby, Millie Mann was able to bash her way through to make the final score 11-5 to Minehead.
The Under-15s challenged their more experienced hosts from the start. Minehead had to work hard to score first, but the visitors came back at them and put pressure on the Minehead defence until Hornettes scored out wide.
Minehead responded with a converted try, but not to be outdone, the visitors also scored a converted try to make the half-time score 12-all.
Minehead took full advantage of the slope in the second half with some quick tries, but the visitors’ scrum was more solid as they pushed the hosts off the ball several times and scored another two tries as Minehead won 40-22.
Four Hornettes Under-18 players combined with Wellington at Wells, but lose a close game 34-32, with Steff Hodges scoring her first try.
Congratulations go to Under-15 player Hannah Capes, who has been picked to play for Somerset and Katie Reynolds and Charmaine Bowen, who are in the Somerset development squad.
