Hornettes ladies were pipped by St Mary's in a top of the table clash.

HORNETTES ladies travelled to Bradley Stoke to play St Mary’s Old Boys ladies, who were joint second in the league with Hornettes.

Hornettes worked hard from the start defending well and containing St Mary’s. Both teams tried breaking through but to no avail. It was in the 20th minute that St Mary’s managed to breach the visitors’ defence and score their first try which was converted.

From the restart, Hornettes worked well as a team to regain the ball and make their way into the hosts’ 22 where the hosts gave away a penalty, Emma Small converting the kick.

St Mary’s responded with another try that was unconverted. This spurred Hornettes into action and with some great interplay between forwards and backs, they worked their way into the hosts 22.

No 8 and captain Sinead Boys picked up from the scrum took the ball forward before passing to vice-captain and scrum-half Kerianne Williams in support, who jinked her way to the try line to make it 12-8 to St Mary’s at half-time.

After the break, Hornettes stepped up their game, only allowing the hosts’ one unconverted try to make the final score 17-8 to St Mary’s.

This was a great team game from Hornettes, with every player working hard and the defence was ferocious. Backs of the match were Beth Ryall and Kate Alder and the forward of the match was Sophie Henley.
