Somerset Premier League champions Winscombe finished the season with victory, their 25th from 26 matches.
Bristol Harlequins 10 pts
Winscombe 45 pts
Winscombe’s fantastic league campaign came to a close against Bristol Harlequins and the Somerset Premier champions triumphed once again, their 25th win from 26 games.
In glorious sunshine, and playing in the traditional club black, Winscombe took a little while to acclimatise to the home side, who employed a forward-orientated game and it was 15 minutes before the scoreboard registered points.
Winscombe’s Callum Stewart being gifted a score after James Flower had scampered through out wide, before Harlequins replied with a penalty.
Sam Dearsley touched down soon afterwards following a glorious chip and chase, but all eyes were centered on the new kid on the block, electric winger George Marsh, in the hope to witness him register his inaugural first team try before the seasons close. After coming close on several occasions, Marsh finally had the space to cut back inside and dismiss a high tackle to touch down just before the break.
The second half saw Winscombe turn the screw and after Paul Cashman dummied himself through a gap and cruised in from 40 yards, Marsh hit his stride and his pace was too much for the home side and he registered two more tries. His hat-trick try leaving defenders flat-footed and rounding off a great display.
The Winscombe pack, who have been delivering consistent possession all season, were once again outstanding from set piece and Dearsley rounded off a solid campaign with five conversions.
The final acts of the game saw the home side score from close range, something that coach Graham Buller will have noted when pre-season training begins.
The club now travel to the Majorca Beach Rugby Competition this weekend for their annual tour, where no doubt the festivities will be long and heavy.
Winscombe 2nd XV also put in a great display away at Somerton and came away as victors 20-50.
The side have been brilliantly led all season by captain Ryan Robinson and player/manager Justin Fear. Their enthusiasm towards the club being a shining example to the many younger players, (and older players) they have nurtured this year.
